Looking for anything about John Jones, born 1846, at Saltley? Warwickshire, mother's name Ellen/Hellen. In 1851 from the census he was living in Broseley, Shropshire with his grandparents, Richard and Hanna, George, Hellen.

Hellen or Ellen is shown as his mother on the 1851 record. Suggestions about where to find him later or even info about his mother....will be appreciated.

as far as i can see it doesnt say hellen/ellen is john jones mother, it just says grandson to richard and hannah. it may be her son but they also had sons richard william and jeremiah as well as george on the census so it could be one of the older childrens son. being such a common name this will be an awkward one!

You are right, on the actual census sheet Ellen was not shown to be mother to John. But on the Ancestry page she is called his mother and Richard and Hanna the grandparents. I have searched everywhere for the sons especially Richard and William. George shows up in later censuses and Jeremiah, my 2X gr grandfather, I have tracked down, so I'm pretty sure he wasn't the father. I can't find any trace of Ellen later either. Thanks for trying....

hello, yes i see she is put as mother on the ancestry page but that is just a transcription by someone for ancestry and they must have assumed she was mother. the original is the one that matters. i will have another look but its very difficuly with jones :rolleyes: :)

Another question, Do you have suggestions about what to see in central Birmingham, the library and Lodge Hill Cemetery, of course and Cadbury's, (all places of interest to me by way of ancestor search) but other places to fill my time this summer when visiting Birmingham?

i think i have found hellen because i thought she probably got married within the next 10 years and sure enough i found a lot of hellens/helens/ellens but wrote down a few which included a william dodd in 1858,

found the census for 1861 william dodd 25, hellen dodd 32, richard dodd 2 and hellen dodd 4 mths - but no sign of john. they were living in broseley, same as the 1851

im not too good at that sort of thing shirley, but there are loads of brilliant places around birmingham. please put your request on another thread, perhaps under general inquiries or something and i know the folks on here will give you some good ideas, especially as you are coming all the way from canada :):)

i looked for hellens, ellens helens in the period 1851-1861, but i also looked for areas. they were in broseley which i noticed came under the area madeley shropshire. wrote down quite a few and looked at the 1861 censuses for their names. ie i had a william pickin, samuel harris, frederick jones, etc. and found them with wife ellen or hellen. then checked if hellen was the right age which would be 32 yrs. when i saw the william dodd with wife hellen and she was 32 and also living broseley, same as 1851 i thought this is probably it. cant be sure but good chance :)
