John Watson tailor

ADELE

master brummie
Hi
Im trying to find out if John Watson b1832 Rugeley worked for himself or someone else. I have found most of the family history on him, his wives and kids . He lived in the aston area and at the time of his death was a Tailor Journeyman.
I just was trying to figure out if he had his own buisness .
Thanks Adele

There is in 1872, 1873:
Watson John, tailor, 165 Irving- street
He is not listed in 1868, and a completely different firm (and occupation ) was in the premises.
Of course this does not necessarily mean 100% that it was the same John Watson

that sounds like my man as he lived in Irving Street with the family. To be honest it was a stab in the dark at what years I looked for as he moved around in his younger years.
What occupation is he down for? I know from the census he worked in the pub trade but was a tailor .
I still think of him having a shop but I guess they worked from houses in that era.
Thankyou for your help Adele

There were a lot of beer retailers around the street, not many of them named in the directories at the time . The nearest named one (where he may have worked ) was The Dolphin at no 174, 9 houses (or shops) down the street

Hi Mike
Sorry I think I mislead you to my last posting slightly. My baby had me up at 2am after his feed I came on the computer and waffled, my spelling on another posting is really bad.
John worked in the pub trade when in Wolverhampton, he moved around a bit and came back to Birmingham about 1870. The family lived in Irving Street for nearly 20 years and then went onto Waterworks Street.
Would they have worked from a house or a shop.
Thankyou for helping me.

I think it was me making an assumption , not you misleading me. As to your question, I think it could be either, though I’m not an expert on tailoring. I do understand that in the Leeds area it would be quite common to do piecework on your own account from a house. Don’t know about brum.
