I have just been reading through a lovely new book by Ted Rudge and John Houghton, In and Around Aston through time. On page number 60 there is an old photo of number 27 Newtown Row where it says M Akers shop was in the 1900's. My great grandfather John Jennings had a bakers shop at Number 29 he was there in 1851 and was still there in 1863 as this was recorded on the death certificate of his first child who died of diptheria. I wonder if anyone could possibly pinpoint which side of M Akers his shop would have been number 29. I am so thrilled to find this photo.:)

How wonderful to find the photo, does it show the shops both sides of number 28?- I hope someone can tell you which side your GGrandfathers shop was. At that time would numbers have been next to each other or odds and evens on different sides?
Polly :)

Number 29 was between Brewer st and Manchester St there was a Jennings at that adress till the early 1870,s they have gone in 1873 it was still a bakers

Thanks for that Bammot. Polly I will have to sort an old map out now. By 1871 they he had moved to larger premisses in Burbury Street. John Houghton has very kindly sent me a copy of the original photo in the book. I now have an idea of the street where his first shop was. Wendy

Sorry to disappoint you, but in the 1880s the numbering of Newtown Row was altered from continuous to odd one side, even the other. No 29 in 1884 and before was no 61 in 1888 and after. I think no 29 (1868) (61 in 1888 on) is the building marked in red in the 1890 map , though I could possibly be one building out

In 1881 my g.grandparents lived at 26 Newtown Row, with their family including my grandma, my g.grandma Mary Ann Yates ran a Fish & Chip shop.

Sylvia
They were there (Richard Yates listed) in 1879, and (later as no 55) in 1888, but someone else had taken over by 1890

He was at 306 Burburry St in 1888 he was still there in 1892 and 1896 where he is listed as a baker and corn dealer that is the last time I can trace him

You are such a brilliant bunch. I know my gt grandfather moved to Burbury Street after Newtown Row and retired and then moved to a house on The Lozells Road. Thanks to your info I now know the dates. Mike never mind at least I have a flavour of what the shops on Newtown Row were like, thanks for the map I will save that. Thank you everyone for your help. I will have to look if the Yates were any connection as my grandmother was Clarissa Yates.

Mikejee, Richard Yates was my g. grandfather, Mary Ann his wife died aged 39 in September Quarter 1890 either in childbirth or shortly afterwards, on the 1891 census Richard and family were living at 9 Manchester Street, just a stone's throw away.

Wendy, I have a lot of information on my Yates family, but have not come across a Clarissa to date.

Sylvia I haven't done much research on this part of my family. My gt gt gt grandfather was Richard Thomas Yates b 1829 he married Agatha Zipfell. His brother was William Yates b 1823 married Mary Ann Zipfell. Yes you've guessed it two brothers married two sisters. I will have to do some more research.
