John Hudson Union Castor Works

Lynnept

Brummie babby
Hi,
In the background of a photo of my grandmother there is a building behind her with the name 'John Hudson Union Castor Works' on it. Does anyone know where this company was, could it be in Aston?
Many thanks
Lynne

I've attached the photo for information. It looks like she is standing in front of a shop with the Castor Works in the background. I have enhanced this photo.

Great picture. John Hudson's Works was on the West side of Sheep Street in the 1913 Kelly's Directory. (Back of No. 25) and close to Lawrence St. So the picture may be taken on the East side and maybe at the corner with Lawrence
street ?

In 1933 John Hudson's works was at 257 Heneage Street, this could be the 'Meter Works' shown on the map in which case the shop would be John Clarke (shopkeeper) of 59 Dartmouth Street. Any idea when the picture was taken?

In 1940, 257 Heneage Street was John G. Sutherland & Sons (gas meter mfrs.) which seems to indicate that this is the correct location. I started looking at later dates because of the photo being in colour, then reading more closely (a lack of attention on my part), I realised it had been colourised.

Thank you for all your kind information. Florence was born in November 1883. I'm not good at judging ages but she looks to be about 30ish in the photo. Maybe it was taken around 1913 or so.

Have you been able to establish a link to the shop? As you are probably aware, when they were married they were living in New John Street, not that far from Heneage Street.

Thank you for your reply. I can't find anything that connects her to the shop & I'm wondering why someone would take a photo of her there. She had 13 children so I can't see her working in a shop as well but thanks for your help.

I don't know if it is just coincidence but in 1912 there was a Mrs. Ellen Brierley (fried fish dealer) at 314 Arthur Street, Small Heath.
