John Bright Street

That's not a vent pipe, but there are quite a few around the city, Their main job is venting the storm drains and sewers, not to let the smell out but to allow air to escape when sudden high demand fills the pipes and the risk of air locks could hinder the water running away smoothly. Sewer gas is lighter than air and escapes upward, not where anyone can smell it. Some places in the country used to have gas lamps burning 24/7 to dispose of it, as it is flammable.

this one has been on before but this is a little clearer...does anyone know what the lone building standing was...caption says after bombing ww2

There is some writing on the lower part of the building to the left but I can’t quite read it!

I guess the position was the corner of John Bright Street at the end of Lower Severn Street, I think the damaged building on the right must have been repaired as it looks very similar to today's view..

As you can see from the 1950s map, this building is wrongly numbered. It is labelled as 84 and 86, when (going from the series of numbers up to it, it should be 94 and 96. This is labelled in the 1940 Kellys as Frederick's Hairdressers, but not listed in the1943, 1944 1946 or 1949 editions
