I've read the threads by Astonian on the JELF family with interest. I'm descended from the JELFs of Wichenford/Hartlebury. I've got back to a William JELF who married Sarah JONES on 4th August 1793 at Hartlebury.

The Maria and Samuel mentioned in the different threads are 'mine'.

I was wondering if anything had been properly firmed up with the George William and Mary Ann connections to Worcester?

BEST WISHES ASTONIAN ;;;;

Hello Astonian, and thanks for replying. I'm well and hope you are too. I'm descended from the JELFs through my father's mother's father.

William JELF who married Sarah JONES in 1793 is my GGGG Grandfather. He had 8 children that I know of. One of his daughters, Sarah, christened in 1800 in Hartlebury, was my GGG Grandmother. She married a PAYNE. The PAYNE's daughter married a JONES and, in turn, one of the JONES' daughters married a COX which is my maiden name.

In the 1841 census, William was a farmer in Claines. He had another daughter, Maria, (christened 1803 at Hartlebury) who married Henry PRICE. Maria and Henry farmed Peg House Farm near Wichenford. Maria is also shown as a Toll Collector at Wichenford in 1851 census. They don't appear to have had any children.

The Maria that was shown in the census in the earlier posts, staying with the DANIELs etc. in 1861 is the daughter of Samuel JELF, who was c. 21st June 1807 at Hartlebury. Samuel's father was my GGGG Grandfather, William. Samuel was a farmer and dealer in fruit at Peg House Lodge, Wichenford. The family she is staying with at the time are my direct forebears.

The PAYNEs, JONES's and JELFs seem to intermarry quite a bit!

Does any of this tie in with the info you have?

i received a letter from a person in brum about two years ago
from a lady ,asking me what my intrest in the family
she signed her name as edwards with an address ,
but yesterday the name of edwards appeared in the records
which states she married a jelf

take care

jelfs of worcand b,ham

hi stshep
on your previous thread you said norman was ernies brother ,
well thats not the case but i am certainly looking forewarded
to you in you seeing margret ,and letting us know whom was normans father
normanwas my mothers first cousin and i believe they was very close when they was young as she often used to talk about norman
and she did say many times that he worked at the hospital for years
when you speak to margret , please tell her that my mother
was the only child born to ernie and bertha ,her name was
joyce ,ivy beatrice jelf at new cannal street digbeth where they lived
i am in contact with two other cousins of the jelfs ,incidently i am
ernie,s grandson as you are apparently aware
the two other cousins i am in contact with are raymond ,[bills son]
and georgie jelf , george s son ,
raymond his living in oxford , and george lives in weoly castle ,b,ham
and i live in hartlebury worc
a couple of years ago george wrote and told me about norman
passing away because i was hoping to speak to norman
did margret ever go to ivy,s funeral in 1983 ?
and could yo asked margret does she know anythink about a dennis jelf
whom lived in the washwood heath rd in the 1970,s
i believe he was one of arthurs off spring s as i would certainly
like to trace any way stshep i will hang up now ,until i hear from you again
but i certainly can fill you in on the whole back ground of the jelfs
from way back to the roots of the jelfs and there for fathers
when they all lived in bretfordan at one time
have a nice day best wishes astonian ,

jelf of worc and

hi stshepgood morning to you
just a quick reply i,m afraid to say regarding your uncle and
your uncle norman , jelf
norman jelf , was my grandfather s brothers son , whom name was george
george was my grand fathers oldest brother and he died in january
on the 6 th 1930 ,george did have two shops in the aston area ,
and one in at along the front of snow hill station in the city centre
your aunty married into the jelfs empire of coffee shops ,
george was my grand fathers brother , named ernest jelf, and george
was the oldest and the first son of william george jelf the gt grand father
georges family constisted of the following
there was george , lily , norman your uncle ,and irene ,of his family
so your aunty married norman ,whom was my grand fathers brothers son
and my moms first cousin , unfortunately my mother did not have any
brothers and sisters but there you go and george is burried in witton cem
stshep ,but ernie was the one with all the bussiness
all except the main operating point head qaurters if you like
where the great father started and operating from
Ivydene ,901 tyburn rd erdington , which was handed to ivy jelf
whom never ever ran a bussiness in her life until she was left the bussiness
of tyburn rd . ivy was an office worker secretary
that caused a rift between them ,him and ivy ,
but eventualy ernie gave in and sold a shop to ivy on the lichfield rd
just after the queens coronation in 1953 ,
we,ll stshep i,ve got to hang up now but may be we can contact each other another time ,any think you want to know more
don,t hestiate to get on thread or email okay there is alot more i can tell you about the jelfs and thereinvolvement in this b,ham city
i,ve got to dash now
best wishes astonian ,;;;

miss ivy jelf

hi everybody ,and especialy stshep
iv,e had a phone call outof the blue from a lady whom knows alot
about the jelfs and the empire.
stshep, i will be shorly telling you whom was normans father ,
i have been dicusting about norman and it makes us and your auntie
cousins ,how about that ,
and that i have finaly found ivy,s resting place ,
she has told me the story of ivy as to where she is resting
after all the hard work and the help of certain members on this site
and the time and money i,ve spent i have finaly found her
and she is with her father and mother at erdington ,
and she told me what most people of the family ,did,t know
and wanted to know, about a fall out with her brother,
whom vowed never to step over the fresh hold of her shop, and home
and also of the gambling of one of the brothers , of selling off
the bussiness to cover the loss of i.o.u.s
she is also arranging a meeting that another senior member from derby to come down to brum ,
she is preparing pics of the william george senior and of mary ann hughes
and many more info , for me as i am writing a book on them
i will let you know later more okay
best wishes astonian ;;;

Ido not want to disclose the reason for this being at he moment, but
the lady in question have given me a vauluable reason for the doing so
as to why the inscription was not put on ,
also the lady,s mother hold all the questions and answers to all my investigations to what i,ve been researching ,
they both live in b,ham , and apparently the lady whom lives in derby
is also a long lost cousin ,i,m told she elderly and she is arranging to bring her down to b,ham with more info;

ALL EXCEPT ONE THE MAIN MAJOR ONE HEAD OFFICE IF YOU LIKE
AND THAT WAS [ IVYDENE ] 901 TYBURN RD ERDINGTON B,HAM

Hi Emf and Astonian

I am new to the site but when looking thro the surname list i stopped at yours because I know a family of Jelfs in Birmingham in the Quinton area and although they are not my family I wondered if they were connected to you. All I know at the moment is the oldest Jelf was Harry (could be henry) born early 1930's. He died quite young but his sons still around if you would like me to find out more please let me know!

Re: jelfs

Hello

I have alot of Jelfs in my family they all seem to have come from Bretforton Worcs, my Sarah Jelfs married Issac Cormell.

Ststep
hi sttepi,ve been going through some of my old threads on the topic of jelfs of worc and the last one you wrote you mentioned your aunt was married to a jelf and his name was norman over at castle bromwich
and i asked what would have been normans father , but i never got a reply from no-one on that request but now i know ,i can tell you
according to the records i have asatained normans father was george
jelf and when norman told you his father said he had got a brother over at aston running coffee shops he was correct his brother was my grand father ernest jelf my grand father , so norman is in my family
and he would be my mothers cousin along with irene and dorothy
as well so we are family related .what a turn up for the books
best wishes astonian ,;;

Hello I read your posts with great interest as my mothers family are all Jelfs from Birmingham and I wondered if they were anything to do with you . I'm afraid I haven't got very far all I know is that my GG grandfather was called Francis born 1845 and was originally from Birmingham He was a pocket book maker and his son George was born in St Leonard in London in 1864 He went to a Bluecoat school , but we aren't sure if it was in Birmingham or Norfolk (his mother Eliza was from Kings Lynn). Is this anything to do with your Jelfs?
