Jelf Thomas (b.1848)

Hi

I am trying to find out more information on a Thomas Jelf (b.26 March 1848) to an Ann Jelf (there is no father registered on the Birth Certificate). Does anyone know who his father was? Or any information on Ann Jelf? I have found him on the 1861 census as a 13 yr old Visitor(but not 100% sure).

Thomas married a Mary (b.1845 in Kingswood, Birmingham) and they had 5 children, William, Alfred, Ada, Arthur Charles (my great grandfather) and Albert Edward. They lived in 3 Back 41 Sandy Lane, Aston according to the 1881 Census.

Re: Thomas Jelf (b.1848)

Here's a possible marriage for Thomas JELFF to Mary Farrall or there is a Mary Ann Smith in 1869 Bham ref JFM quarter 6d 149. Maybe his marriage certificate might say his father's name if he had found out from his mother by then?:)

And the Ann Jelf with daughter Amelia that Shera found is listed in the 1851 census born in Kings Norton in 1824 and daughter Amelia B1850 Bham but no sign of a Thomas with them:(. Ann is a servant living at 2 house 9 court Holloway Head, Bham.

EDIT beat me to it Shera :)

You two do work quick don't you. Thanks for the information, I guess I have some more digging to do.

I don't have my "master" version with me but will double check which Mary I may have (from memory neither name rings a bell).

According to Astonian (some time back), I think Thomas may have had something to do with a Coffee Shop round the corner from Sandy Lane. His Aunt knew of Thomas as the houses backed on to each other.

If anyone else comes up with anything please let me know.

Re: Thomas Jelf (b.1848)

hi johnsnp
thomas jelf did live in sandy lane aston
and it was a large house and it was the back of my dads sisters house in park street down the side of the vine pub .
i do have some paper work burried away
relating to thomas which i got from afew years ago when researching my family .my grand parents and his family history
the jelfs and there was a mention of one of the daughters marrying a smith and she was living in erdington
so thomas and smith are connected at some point
and as some-one pointed out to me a very long time ago the jelfs was into inter relationships which i have discovered to be truth .and alot of skeletons i have discovered a mary ann jelf
and a ann jelf through out the decades and it may be possible that this could be the same lady as i have said i have a rake of info;so i will try and sort through it again from the beginning
and come back toyou okay ;
as my timeis running on a schedule i will try and do my most upper most to dig it out for you
could you please tellme what part is your connrction with the jelf
where if any are you in line with the jelfs
there are a rake of sibblings whom i see quite often back down in eversham honrybourne and brettonford where the breeding grounds are where they all originated from going back centuries have you tried st lennords in brettonford and some of the early ones whom was related to the churches and invovled with the church have all there documents and there provisions to the church is kept and loccked in the vaults of eversham abbey vaults today .
look forwared to hearing from you soon
have a nice day best wishes astonion ;;

Re: Thomas Jelf (b.1848)

Hi Astonian

I had a feeling you would reply, seen as you have a wealth of knowledge on the Jelfs.

My connection to Thomas Jelf is through my grandfather Arthur Charles Jelf (b. 1911 d. 1994) and his father Arthur Charles Jelf (b. 1883 d. 1952). Thomas married a Mary - possibly Mary Ann Smith from above (b.1845 in Kingswood, Birmingham) and they had 5 children, William, Alfred, Ada, Arthur Charles (my great grandfather) and Albert Edward. They lived in 3 Back 41 Sandy Lane, Aston according to the 1881 Census.

If I can find out where Thomas Jelf came from, then I may be able to link up with what you have in your Jelf family tree. As his birth certificate gives no name of the father, I wonder if the inter relationships you mention may have happened here (hence the father not being mentioned).

You have mentioned in one of your previous posts about a Mary Ann Jelf (d. 16 Sept 1946), but if this is the same woman then she would have lived til she was 100, so I am not sure on that one.

Look forward to hearing from you soon
