Howarth & Co., Umbrella Makers

Howarths had premises at 8,9&11 Bull Street and at 56 High Street. Haven’t been able to trace any information about them. They made and repaired umbrellas. They were also noted for their brilliant and humourous adverts. Looking at them, the costumes etc look Edwardian or earlier?

Hope folks enjoy looking at them – I did.

Edited thread title.
It is actually JT Howarth.
Prior to 1900 they had shop in High Street, Worcester.
Many thanks for that. Checked again and found:
"The successful man is nearly always the well-dressed man, but a poor umbrella will kill the most expensive suit. However, one of our special "Defiance" umbrellas (only 10/6d) will add lustre and polish to the tailor's art. Try one at J.T Howarth and Co., 83 High Street, Worcester." [1901. Worcester News]
"We make all our own Umbrellas and you thus get them at FIRST COST. For Re-Covers and Repairs we are A 1. J. T. HOWARTH 83, HIGH STREET, WORCESTER." [1897]

Now found an entry for J.T. Howarth & Co., Umbrella Maker at 97 Alcester Road, Moseley on the Parade from 1905 - 1981 in Kellys etc. Just shows how a simple copying mistake has consequences.............

Lovely adverts. Mentions that they took over Howarths in 1923 including premises at 11 Bull Street. This makes me wonder about the accuracy of my comment in post 4 above that they were in Moseley Village until 1981. This was based on list of Moseley Shops in 1981 produced by the Moseley Society. Did they get it wrong? Can anyone check in Kellys in the 1960s or 70s or earlier for Alcester Road, Moseley for Kendalls and Howarths? Thank you.

My final word [well maybe!]. Came across this phot dated 1962 showing Midland Bank at 97/99 Alcester Road and a further reference to the bank at 97/99 in 1948. Clearly the Moseley Society got it wrong to suggest Howarths were there in 1981.! Sad really, but this is how mistakes get perpetuated once they are in print.................

Yes, superdad3 .... I was prompted to look in the directories because I knew that my bank in the 1970's was at 97 Alcester Road.
Kelly's shows JT Howarth at that address in 1921, but replaced by the Midland Bank by 1932.
