I think its facinating that the whistles made for the officers on the Titanic were made at J Hudson Ltd in the Jewellery Quarter. A company still going today! They also made the whistle that Kate Winslet used in the film Titanic.

My dad worked there from the age of 50 until he retired. He used to solder the smaller volumes of whistles and set the induction heating machines. He was a tool maker by trade and previously worked for Baker Metal Stopper Co. also in Hockley. The factory was shut when they compulsory purchased the land for the underpass on the inner ring road. I seem to remember that the underpass was built for years before any road connected with it! Does anyone else remember this?

Acme Whistles

J. Hudson and G. (whistles) features in the current BBC programme ’Back in tine for Birmingham’. The firm is still trading and over 150 years old. There is an extensive article in the Birmingham Post of 19 September 1970 for their centenary.
