You know that advert for "Worthers Original" those very ordinary and not very special sweets, they attempt to give the impression that these things have been around for ever in the TV advert but I dont remember them, furthermore they are German, so if this old man, the doting grandfather, was giving these things to his various relatives then he certainly was'nt doing it this side of the English channel. I know this is not a product that strictly falls with in this thread but I dont like adverts that bend history.

Have just realised, Bill, how often Werthers Ooriginals comes up if you google it . About a third the things are not suitable for a family forum. but. according to wikipedia (not always completely reliable) it first came out in 1969 under another name in Germany and was n't called its present name till 1969 when they tried to convert the world. Must admit, I never thought they were available in this country till fairly recently, but did think they might have been available in Germany for a while.

I googled it to mike and I even did it with the incorrect "Worthers" which I will keep on my post without correction lol !! What annoyed me slightly was the way in which this german product appears to have a British speaking grandad claiming his granfather gace him Werthers as a treat, now my point is which side was he bating on during the last war along with his worthers, thats why i find this silly advert slightly distasteful, just like their confectionary.

Im intrigued by those other findings, I dont remember seeing any but then again I only looked at the google posting, plus the fact I was incorrectly searching for "Worthers"

Lyn and Jayell, parma violets are my favourites, you can get king size ones of them now, Owen got me a tube on the way home from school the other day! As for lovehearts, the messages are naff on them now, no sloppy things now, "get lost" "chill" and "cool it" amongst others lol! And fairy satins - my nans neighbour used to get them for me, stuck to the bag but lovely!
Sherbert fountains too, todays are in a plastic tube, no soggy paper, no fun!!
Mom loves the "flying saucers", our shop has started stocking them again, she says they make her mouth sore though.

I bought some "Elliman's Liniment" for my husband. It smells the house out but he says it did some good!!
It's made from vinegar and turpentine with egg powder. At least it helped where painkilllers fail, and cleared my head too!!
I have to be careful because of all his other medication.
rosie.

I remember using Sloans but can anyone remember using Horse liniment. Was it Sloans Horse Liniment??

There used to be a super display of old packaging, ie, tins, boxes packets etc at Gloucester docks, unfortunately this Robert Opie collection has, I believe, now closed down.

I will look at my Robert Opie books and see what I can find from my childhood that we still use.

Like you I find the advert silly and offensive, and I find Worther's products plain horrible. Someone I know who is connected with Cadbury's said that Worther thought that Cadbury's UK sales would collapse after their takeove by Kraft, hence Worther's extensive advertising. Tastless, like their sweeties. German sausage: very nic. German sweeties: yuk.

Trevor I used horse liniment when I broke my arm. It contains paraffin. It is called white Embrocation [white liniment] and has the same ingredients that the old horse liniment contained. Jean.

Mom is well chuffed, we went to Sally, my daughters, in London yesteray and in, of all places, a Mediterranean food hall, she found tins of Milo - an ovaltine like bedtime drink they always used to have apparently!

I think this is still around too. Come on now, all sing along .......... Viv.

My missus bought some tubes of Smarties yesterday, to cheer us up after the Budget, and they were horrible! They were chewy, seemed stale, and didn't even taste of chocolate. I used to devour Smarties by the tube at one time, gently sucking the sugar off before the chocolate hit my tatse-buds. The label was printed in several languages, so we assume these once-lovely sweeties are now made in some distant land. Shan't be buying those again.

Two products that are still around, although Babycham isn't that easy to find. Artic Roll seems to have gone through a bit of a revival. Viv.

I used to use Nailoid manicure cream when I was 15yrs old, and still use it. It hasn't changed it's perfume or consistency in all that time. Can't say that about many things can we? Brillo pads are not as nice as they used to be, the soap just seems bunged in somehow. They used to be a neat shape with the soap firmly inside the pad.

This one I always associate with being ill. If you weren't well, you could guarantee someone would rush out and buy a bottle. The bottle used to be enveloped in orange cellophane. Always thought the taste was disappointing. The claims made for the product in the ad are a bit surprising. Viv.

I love Lucozade - but only the original one - Owen loves it too and its a lifesaver for Dad if his sugar levels drop wile we are out, mom or I always have a bottle handy if we are going out for the day.
I guess the claims are loosely true in that if you are ill and not eating properly, the gluose in it will raise your sugar levels and make you feel better, also if your sugar level is low, you can feel anxious, hence the calming effect and then if you are relaxed you feel more like eating - lol - sounds like a test for student nurses in the days gone by!!

Hi Sue. Hadn't realised how useful it is. Now I see it in different light. I think the taste was a disappointment when I was a kid as I expected it to taste like real pop. However, I did love the cellophane which if you looked through it made the world all orange and sunny! Viv.

I loved the paper too, it made lovely coloured windows in my lego houses lol! I can remember being really upset when my brother had mumps and my aunt and cousin came to visit him with lucozade and ice cream because he couldn't eat - and I didn't get any! I know what you mean about the taste though, but I love it now, the fizzy one though not the sports one.
Sue

Remember these. Still available today but different sizes and changed cover. I liked to play with the empty books. Think they were made from a very low quality, rough paper. This is from a 1950s GPO ad. Viv.

Ha ha Mike. It's interesting that each book contained stamps of various values too. Viv
