Hi all
can anyone tell me where the district of islington was in birmingham in 1863
and what it is called today thanks

We have a Street called Islington Row it,s up by 5 ways Broad St it probably comes under Edgebaston. Dek

Islington was n't so much a district as a road, as can be seen from the 1866 map below. In that period the western end of Broad st was called "Islington"

Hi
thanks for information.i was looking at slaters directory of birmingham 1863.it said it contained details of city centre bordsley , deritend,
edgbastion,handsworth and islington.

hi mike
you are quite right to a degree but five ways down to wards calthorpes offices
by the plough and arrow hotel and with in a mile of the five ways hotel and that big hotel wherethe president stayed on the island and down and around to the botical gardens
and including five ways house years go was the main tax office for birmingham
and all there correspondences carried the name of the district as islington
and i am sure if you were to mooch around the area there is an ennamel sign that still
in place tells you the district of islington i am aware of the street sign that is
islington row and thats how it got its name from the district
its only a small area around five ways are that was classed as the district of islinton

hi guys
may i just add that particular area at the time it was called islington and it was all owned even today by the calthorpe family trust the city was split into two halfs in those years all owned by the cadbury family
and the five ways area was the calthorpe family as we all now now that these two govering bodies of familys is now run trust societyies thjere is some of the calthorpes sibbling live around westfield rd even today
they cover the whole of edgbaston roight down to the bristol court hotel and even the bbc land
and the property owners still cannot do any work to there bussiness with out consulting calthorpes society
and they have to replace with the oriniopnal m,aterials the property was built with as i have said it
was marginional area of the city wher the jewish commutity started to migrate to ion our city
as you know of islinton in london
