Isacc Jennings....... Help!

This one is driving me mad. Isacc was born in January 1821 Lutterworth Leicestershire in the new crimminal records he went to trial for larceny in 1840 and was sentenced to 7 years transportation. In 1841 he is in prison in London. This is the last time I find any info on him. My family bible states he drowned at sea. Now I wonder because I assume convicts would be shackled so did the ship go down. The ship which could be likely (I had help here from Ray) is the Warterloo which went down in a bay in 1842. I have searched Ancestry and other sites with passenger lists with no luck. Can anyone help or give me some more suggestions. Thanks for your time.:)

It was Table Bay,off South Africa,which would have been en route to Australia...no Suez canal them days.

I have convict ancestors c1840 who were transported to NSW Australia and this link may help you. The Australian archives are involved in numerous indexing projects and the information they hold are also linked to the British and Irish Convict records.

The authorities in the colony would have been expecting the convict ship to arrive on a certain date and if it was lost at sea they would have a record of it and it would also have been reported in the Australian Newspapers so there will be further details available if this happened. If it was a case that Isaac was drowned at sea then the Ships surgeon journal would record exactly what happened to him. These records are available in both London and Australia.

I wonder how your ancestors knew that Isaac was drowned at sea, unless it was reported in the newspapers in England.

If you e-mail the NSW archives and ask how you can find out what happened, include all the details about Issac that you know, the trial dates, his crime, place of trial, sentence, his age, occupation etc they can tell you the name of the ship and where further information can be found.

Once you have the name of the ship you can google it and there will be other convict or ships sites with information or forums for those with convict ancestors.

Here is a link to a searchable Australian Convict database but I did not find any record of Isaac by putting in 1841+jennings or 1842+jennings so this database may only record those convicts who arrived and had their indents taken. you could send a feedback / info request to this archive too.
