Is it possible to get hold of a copy of a passport?

Is it possible to obtain a copy of a passport or passport application? My grandfather sailed from England to Australia in 1922 so would have had a passport, I understand. It would be superb to see a picture of him or at least a description of his physical appearance & the passport or passport application is my last hope.
A search on National Archives database has only generated my Grandfather's WW1 papers.
1)If the NA hold passport papers what steps should I take?
2)As I can demonstrate that I am close family & that my Grandfather died would it mean that I can access the papers despite the 100 year rule?

I think this is highly unlikely, assuming that the records still exist. The index of Passport Applications 1851-1903 has been released and is on FindMyPast, but it only contains the name and date of the application, nothing else.

Your only other hope is an application under the Freedom of Information Act. I've just had an FOI application granted in respect of a possible ancestor, returning from the USA, who applied to be re-admitted in 1933. It won't be in the National Archives until 15th June, so I can't tell you what it contains! :P

You could try an email to [email protected] but don't hold your hopes too high!

Maurice
