Hi All,

I know there will be people out there can help me with my quest! I am trying to find the address of Barbarella's and Peppermint Place Nightclubs please!

I remember a small club on Corporation Street somewhere where Yates/The Crown are and I thought it was Barb's but a friend said no.....and we are both too young to remember (honestly)

I "remember Peppermint Place being on Broad Street by Five Ways but another friend said it was at the top of New Street!

And does anyone remember Hosteria's Wine Bar??

Please Help!:)

Re: New Member- info on Barbarella's and Peppermint Place nightclubs

Barbarellas was on Broad St just past the Alex, and the club on Corporation St next to the Crown Hotel was Sloopy's. Wasn't Peppermint Palace one of the newer places around John Bright st or was that Spearmint Rhino?

Hi Peppermint Place was definately Broad Street, I think it had the tiniest dance floor in history. If I remember right it was the last building before the 'new' 5 ways complex. It was the first nightclub I went to! Was Maxamillions next door??? not sure - but Faces was inside the five ways shopping centre - good times!

I remember Barbarellas very well. I used to go there in the 1970s - saw lots of punk bands there - I loved it...

There were also Rebeccas and Pollyanas - I dont remember where Pollyanas was but I think (and I'm sure someone will correct me if wrong) Rebeccas was on the site where Edward's No 8 was in the 90s... (maybe it's still there I don't know...). I always understood that the clubs were owned by Eddie Fewtrell and named after his daughters...Was there another club with a similar name as well - maybe a fourth daughter?

When I was very little there was a club called 'Castaway' or 'The Castaways' on I think Bradford St. There was a big sail (like on a boat) outside the entrance. My mum always looked a bit disaproving when I commented on how nice it looked....

Peppermint Place I don't remember at all...

Pollyannas was at the top of Newhall St, about 30 yards down from Colmore Row...I drank half a pint of lager out of a girls boot in there..laughs...happy days.

Thanks for the Welcome...and all the info! I did have Barberella's confused with Sloopys.....Peppermint Place was on Broad Street, where the Cinema now is (Showcase). Faces was in the Shopping Centre (became XL's) and I am reading Eddie Fewtrells Auto biog. and some of the clubs were before my time so I needed further info......

Boogies, Boogies Brass., Paramount, Goldwyns, Edwards no. 7/8.....all great places and there will never be an atmosphere like it again!!!!!!

New Romantic Gal....cos I was a fan of the 80's......ABC, Heaven 17, Human League etc......Great Era!

Yes Kandor ,
You Are Spot On , When I Read There Thread ,I Smiled
I Knew They Was Wrong It Was Cumberland St And It Was Along Side The Old Bush House Of Broad St ,[ For Those WhomDon,t Recall Bush House , It Was The Old B,ham City Housing Department And If I Correctly Remember Rightly The Rep Thearter Was There Then Along Side The Hall Of Memory Broad St Was Full Of Old Second / Antigues Shopsw Just Before The Tow Rope All Nighter

Have A Nice Day Best Wishes ASTONIAN ,;;;

Yes I remember it well "as the song goes":) The Rum Runner opened before Barabarellas and Rabecca's. I loved looking in those Antique come Junk shops next to the Tow Rope. Does anyone remeber the gay couple Barry and Carmen we had some laughs with them!

Wendy

There were quite a few gays that used the Tow Rope and the Rum Runner in the mid 60's, Gays anywhere were a novelty in those days, now they are the norm.

I used the Rum Runner infrequently but I stopped using it after four of us (two couples) were refused entrance and were given no reason. The only reason I could think of was my mate at the time was of Indian ethnic origin. We just left and went elsewhere, you didn't argue with bouncers in those days.

Phil

All,
Pollyannas, Ground Floor of Newater House, started life as the Revolution[cold war theme], owned by Don Fewtrell? Prior to that part of it was the office of Air India. Was always a strange place for a club!
Rebeccas was on Severn Street, all three floors of it[A bit like three different clubs in one]. Sloopys was a personal favorite in the 70's and had live music too. Good times!:)
Also 'Le Metro' which became 'The Holy City Zoo'[Andy Gray, ex. Villa, part owner] in one of the railway arches in Livery Street on the corner of Lionel Street.

Barbarella's was a favourite place of mine, used to stagger up broad street every friday night after having a few in Costermonger, Cabin, Hole in the Wall & Guilded Cage. Sloopy's was useful if at end of night you fancied another drink just before you got the night service bus home , I don't remember Peppermint Palace but I do remembr Rebecca's and Pollyanna's.

Used to go to Rum Runner but nearly all the time I could not get in - didn't look old enough, another place was the Cedar Club and the Elbow Room.

I remember Barry was something of a celebrity around the town a bit of a comic, he used to camp it up and most of the police knew him.:)

Barry lived in a house converted to flats in the same road as my parents in Kings Heath. There was always a stream of visitors day and night and I can remember the sight of Barry dressed up in his finest female gear complete with high heels, running down the road after his dog using the most colourful language. The dog was a miniature poodle which on one occasion had its coat dyed pink. They left after about two years, the road was never the same after

HI Barry ,
Yes You Are Quite Right I Have To Laugh At Your Thread They Was Massionettes, Thats How He Always Dressed , And He Always Had Is Poodle
That Was His Baby , I Was Surprized To Hear You Said He Only Left Two Years Ago.
I Thought He Might Have Been Dead By Now ,

Peppermint Place was on Broad Street, on the same side as and close to the Five Ways shopping centre, going towards town.

I went there just once and was thrown out for opening the emergency exit to let some air in on a hot night.

next to five ways shopping centre were tiger tiger was. a little post office stood onthe corner . they closed it down about 66-67 and the first name of the club was chaplins could not get in i was only five , on the same side slightly down from there was the infamous saints and sinners cafe

I used to frequent Barbarellas and the bars/pubs around there in the 70's and I remember going to the Hosteria - I used to call it the 'Posteria Bar' and if I remember it was fairly near to the Punk Fashion Shop called Kahn & Bells - do you remember that? It was owned by Patti Bell - she used to live (might have been married to) Steve Gibbons, from the Steve Gibbons Band, she ran the shop with Jane Kahn - both were always a sight to behold back then, especially as they were kind of Celebs in the Punk Scene - wonder if I met you at all? I died my hair all sorts of colours, sometimes greased it back Bowie fashion - my oh my, how things have changed. The Steve Gibbons Band used to play Barbarellas and some of the other 'Punk Venues' up and down the Country. I went to some of their parties which were wild to say the least. Do you ever remember the '2 Julies from Blackpool? Did you ever hang around in the cafe almost opposite Kahn & Bells? It was a run down place and most of the social drop outs hung out there. They had a Jukebox with some pretty cool songs, one of my favourites was Bob Marley, No Woman No Cry - wonder if anyone else remembers those places. Andy W.
