Sorry about the lack of colour, but it is the middle of the night. A bit of quandary for Julie, as she loves nature in general, and likes to see the deer, but is also worried about what they decide to chew on in the garden, and would prefer that they stayed in the field at the rear. We are away at the moment looking after a friends caravan site in the area of Limoges until Sunday. We will see if the deer have left anything growing when we get back. We have had a wild boar (sanglier) excavating trenches round the back in the past, and also a badger digging holes. None of those will be worried by fences, deer go over, boar goes through and badger goes under.

Yes thanks. A lot of the things Julie plants are chosen for being unpalatable to deer. We did see a few chomped stem ends, but recoverable. While we were away we did see a fox roaming about several times. We noticed some interesting behaviour. The fox seemed to have a fixation on one patch of the garden which is just scrub grass. It would suddenly dive nose first at some particular spot, then carry on wandering about. Oddly, we also saw one of our local regular cat visitors showing interest in the same spot. Nothing to see there when we got back, no holes in the ground.
We have several visiting cats, but only one at a time. They must have agreed a schedule between themselves. We are fine with the cats, we very rarely see mice. There is one that likes to sit on the access hatch for the septic tank, takes all sorts. Badgers are OK, we had one deal very effectively with an underground wasps nest a while ago. I just had to fill the hole in afterwards. We don't see any of this during the day, it all shows up on the cameras at night.
What we do get during the day is birds. Julie puts a tray of sunflower hearts on the window cill and a half coconut filled with seeded fat hanging off the shutter latch. That is non stop traffic from shutter opening to closing.

This is only my first year of going for it with the bulbs.

Problem, birds pecking the bulbs!!!! So, the Internet tells me I should use 'cloches'!!!!!! I need to do an assessment on how many 'cloches' I need. Any ideas on where to get such items as cheap as possible would be greatly appreciated.
 
We are finally warming up to low 40’s f after two weeks of very cold weather, minus numbers at night, very cold for us. The garden is dormant. We ha$ a critter on our garage who ate most of my wife’s bulbs and a bunch of other things as well as making a mess. We set a trap baited with peanut butter, the first night he did not touch it, then!! Gone now but we have to clean up the garage which is quite large and a mess….We’ll wait until the weather gets a little warmer.
