Hi All I am looking to find grave sites in Birmingham now but have no idea where to start.

The relative I am looking for died in her house in Clifton Road Balsall Heath, Birmingham. Anyone know which cemetry she may have gone to?

Also does anyone know if Clifton Road still has houses on? Or does anyone live near by who could take a photo of number 9 for me?

Thanks in adavance for you help
Sam

Hi Sam

The nearest cemeteries would be Brandwood End or Yardley. Its just possible it may have been Lodge Hill that was used.

Just from memory I think No 9 would have been opposite the Imperial Cinema and before the Railway Bridge. Although I remember houses there,I think they may all have gone now and been replaced with factory units.

As I don't go down that way much now, it could be a while before I'm next that way, but if you haven't been fixed up by then I will take a look for you.

Phil

Hi Sam
attached is a map of the west end of Clifton road in about 1913. I cannot work out which house is number 15, but it would be in the region marked in red on the south side of the street, as already stated. Looking at google, none of the houses around here this side of the street survive.

The cemetery name indexes are at Birmingham Library on microfilm.

Hi
Thanks Phil, and where these 3 cemeteries open in 1949?
Isnt it a shame knocking houses down to but silly units there - grrr!

I'll have to ask my great auntie next time I see her if her Nan's house was oposite the Cinema.

Thanks Mike
The picture backs up Phil's comment being near/oposite the cinema.

Hi Wendy
Thanks for that. I live in Sunderland so my have to have a weekend down in Birmingham and got to library - how sad am I? 24 should be having a weekend out drinking not sitting in library.
Haha never mind

Thanks everyone for your help

Hello again Sam

Yes all three of the cemeteries would have been well established in 1949. You'll find that a lot of houses in Birmingham were cleared in various areas and replaced with factory units. The only trouble is we have little use for them now.

Phil.

After the 60's night in November I drove down Clifton Road from the Mosly Road end to take some photos of my old junior school and I noticed just how many houses in the area have been knocked down. In most places it looks worse now than just after the war! What Hitler couldn't do has been finished off by the 'developers'.

Graham.

If you put Clifton Road in the search box you should find some photos and other information, there are I think two threads one for Clifton Road, Aston, and the Clifton Road you mention. There was some confusion on the two districts in earlier postings.
