That does bring back memories, Postie.

Are there any around Birmingham now? Can't beat those spuds. :2funny:

They are mostly selling Jacket potatoes now at about £20 a throw. :2funny:

£20 for jacket potoatoes from someone on the street! :crazy2:

What would you get for £20? Or have I missunderstood? :o

Sakura, I have no idea what they charge for a jacket, it was just my feeble attempt at being funny. :-[

I bet they aint cheap though. :-\

Having had a holiday in England last year, I would not have been surprised if that was true. :2funny:

Sorry about that, you see I believe anything. :-[

There is still a hot spud man in New street but I'm wondering Jim if you know where that pic was taken, looking at the background I don't think it was in the city centre anywhere

Lovely photo....brings back so many memories...for one thing the oven on wheels always reminded me of those steam rollers that used to come and pave our streets....in miniature, of course. I would say apart from fish and chips, potatoes and chestnuts there wasn't too much fast food around to eat whilst walking along after a film or a night at the Lockers in those days unless you went down to the Bull Ring to Alex's pie stand.
.
I remember when fish shops started selling chicken and chips and people would throw the bones on the ground from the chicken. The Neilson's milk machines were fully operative in those days and I just loved those. There was one on Stockland Green
I remember.

I think the jacket potatoes that they sell these days are just full of extra calories. The list of additions to the potato itself are mind boggling at some places.

Dennis I still have Baked spuds once a week for Friday mid day meal but it must be KING EDWARDS SPUDS and it is ^-^

Whats a ladies man :-\

Don't know about anyone else, but I cook the spuds in the microwave and then put them in the oven just to finish off.

So much quicker. O0

Your right Dennis they always smell so good. :smitten: :smitten: Mo

I RECALL THE GUY SELLING THEM DOWN THE SIDE OF THE MIDLAND HOTEL, AS A BOY ON THE WAY TO DO A LITTLE TRAIN SPOTTING AT THE OLD NEW STREET STATION,ARE THE SMELL OF THEM TATTIES ALONG WITH THE STEAM,SMOKE AND OIL AS I CROSSED THE BRIDGE OVER THE TRACKS , NO PLATFORM TICKET REQUIED HERE.
ANOTHER TREAT WAS AFTER ANIGHT AT THE FLICKS "THE FUTURIST" ? I THINK THATS HOW IS SPELT,THREE COINS IN A FOUNTAIN WAS THE MOVIE.WE MADE IT AFTER A LONG LONG WAIT, IT SEEMED THE WHOLE BIRMINGHAM WISHED TO SEE THIS ONE!

ASTON

According to Saturday Night Live.

He's cool. He's clean. He's a love machine. :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:

Is that you Alfie?

As Dennis said ask the BRA wimmen O0

The Futurist and 'Three Coind in a Fountains" that does bring back memories.

I can remember those line ups as well.

We would freeze or get soaking wet, but it was worth it. O0

Dennis. l too can smell those baked potatoes and remember that they used to shake the oven drawer to roll them over before they closed it again.

Postie - Now that photo brings back memories to me of the old Bull Ring Market minus it's roof of course as a result of wartime bomb damage. Just after the war everything was rationed and in short supply and a big treat for us kids was a shopping expedition which included a trip round the old Bull Ring Market and a guy there with his roast tattie cart. Skin nice and crisp, lots of salt, and we could well have been in heaven! Also if my memory serves me correctly the same cart did roast Chestnuts around Christmas time, and those smells linger with me, and will do until my dying day! Life was hard in those days, not many treats to be had, but those tatties and Chestnuts were very special as was the old Bull Ring which was spoilt, never to have the same charm again once the powers that be decided we needed a modern shoppers paradise. People and places change, but our memories remain!

OOOPs! I'm forgetting that in the big city they are called "spuds" not "tatties" !
Sorry about that folks! Will have to consider a refresher course in good old "Brummie lingo!!!!!!!

Speaky good job you corrected yourself or the crowd would be after you, well done :2funny:

That's how I come to leave Brum in the first place Alf! Chased out of town I was, can't risk it now though, me old legs don't move fast enough!
