Holtom Richard or William Richard

Brummiebell

master brummie
Hi everyone, was wondering if anyone could help me to find any information on the above gentelman who was my G.Grandfather. I only have his marriage Cert which lists his birth as 1856-7 and calls him Richard and his sons Birth Cert which calls him William Richard ( same name as his son) but his army records call him Richard and list his next of kin two brothers John Holtom from Albon Warwickshire and Joseph Holtom from Brighton in Sussex. His discharge address is 3 Belvedere Terrace Great Francis Street Birmingham, when he was discharged in November 19th 1892. He married Rebecca Williamson in 1891 and i have a wealth of info on her but can't find any birth or Census on him. I would love to know where he came from and can't get any further, he is listed as an Agr labourer so belive he may have come from the countryside pior to joining the army, and there are no correct birthdates listed for a william or Richard Holtom in Birmingham, only one I did find was four years out and I don't think that is right. I seem to have so much but all of it leads nowhere, think he may have died between 1897 and 1901 from his children's births and a census listing Rebecca as a widow in that year, however I know he wasn't an angel and he may have left her, they are certainley not shown living together on any census that I have found. Any ideas would be wonderful as I have come to a full stop, can't find any town called Albon and no brothers either. He joined the Royal Altillery at Woolwich in nov 1880 and saw service in Egypt and india in the 12 years prior to his marrage so maybee he fould it hard to settle down with a wife and family. Would just love to find a census or birth record so I can trace back further, would any further Army records show a birth place? Many Thanks Maria

Re: Richard or William Richard Holtom

The surname varies from Holtom to Holton ,according to whichever records you view.
When Richard married Rebecca his name was HOLTON.
His son was Richard William HOLTOM

I believe that your Richard was born in Banbury in 1855,he has a brother called Alban so perhaps the records were incorrect.
In 1861 he is in Banbury
Richard Holtom age 60
Alice age 57
sons Alban 18,George 12,Joshua 10,Richard 5
52 quite an age to have a baby in those days.

In 1871 15 yr old Richard is living with his sister Jane montgomery in Gravelly hill Erdington, which is then in the Aston area.
In 1881 Richard HOLTON is in Royal Artillery in Woolwich.

The family in 1841 in Swalcliffe Oxfordshire
Richard age 40
Alice age 36
John 12,
Jane 10
Charles 8
Esther 4
Henry 2
Charlotte 7 months

Re: Richard or William Richard Holtom

Dear Alberta,

Thank you so much, I have spent hours searching and can't belive how fast you found that. I feel sure that this is my Richard, Holtom has been incorrectley written in the family records before, Rebecca became Dolton at one stage. The brothers fit perfectley, I did wonder if Albon was another brother but couldn't find anything under warwickshire for him perhaps he had moved by the time Richard Joined up. I agree, 52 seems a great age to have a baby, perhaps his mother was really Jane and the grandparents took him on? Maybee that's why he is living with Jane at 15? Now I will be able to search for his birth and death records now I know he is from Banbury, you are clever. Can I ask, how did you find the record of him being in the Royal Artillery in Woolwich, is it on a census, or army records? I didn't know that the army were on census records too.

Thank you again Maria
