HOLTOM Richard 1855

Hello all, have just found out that my G Grandfather is not buried in the family grave. The death of a relative ment that the deeds were gone into and his wife is the first person to have been buried there quite a few years after his death. There is a family story that he won the grave in a card game from one of the Cadburys and it is quite a grand grave. He was in the army with some of them and his grandparents were quite prominant Quakers so he could have known them. He disapears off the Cencus prior to 1901 although we can't find a death cert.Begining to wonder if he did die at home or left his wife and children and went abroad, he had family who emigrated to America around this time. However perhaps he was buried somewhere far less grand and the family came into money later, I have asked Witton Cemetry to do a search for him as this is where the family are burried and close to where he lived. Where else can I search. Any ideas welcome many thanks Maria

Brummiebell, have you looked on the free site, familysearch.org - there are quite a few results for that name, including 1901 census ones, all I put in was his name and birth as Aston, Warwickshire with dates 1854-56.

Hi Sue, have tried that before both with BDM and familysearch but ended up with too many to order certs for. Richard Holtom seems to be quite a common name as I found out when I tried to trace his birth cert and parents. I found that only by accident, as I got hold of his military records which contained names of his brothers and their addresses as next of kin. I then went through all the Holtom families with matching sons names checking where their sons were in the year that Richard joined the army and luckilary found one that matched. I am just wondering if Richard did actually die when we think though as he is not in the grave. He had just compleated 12 years service in Egypt and India then settled down to a wife and four children. His records show him as a bit of a bounder, I wonder if he joined up again, or headed abroad
