That photo of High St/Bull St. is so full of memories. I did traffic point there in 1960/61, and it was quite an exciting place to be on a Saturday, with all the crowds. The fun part was to try and keep all the buses and vans moving (there werent too many private cars) across the junction. The bus drivers knew our various little signals to get them to slow down, change direction, etc, but one day a lady in a small car drove down lower bull Street to my point, and misunderstood my signal and stopped. At that movement I had about six buses crossing Dale End to Martineau Street and High Street, and others following down Bull Hill. I nearly died a death, but with much smiling and sound of horns she eventually got moving again. We used to have our coffee break at the Cypriot cafe just down on the left in Dale End, by the Star pub. I remember putting in a report once asking for a box to be provided for the point, it was quite difficult on busy days to be seen over the heads of the crowds, especially since the little island was also the entrance to the public toilets!!. I did my report, and was then told to 'file it at headquarters'. I found that other officers had been putting in the same report since about 1925, and all filed with the message 'this is a temporary situation.'
