im trying very hard to trace both my side of my family and my husbands. my husbands was fairly easy to do as they were all from bromsgrove and NOKES is a fairly unusual name and as it turned out all the NOKES' that i found from bromsgrove were all related so that made it easier for me. Now its time to do my side of the family i have become a bit stuck. i was wondering if anyone knew how to look at any records for free, or any tips on the best way to search.i dont really want to subscribe to anything as im on a budget having a young family and everything. So if anyone as any advice im all ears!!!!
please help!!:beam:

Sarah just tell us what you want with as much information that you have got, with dates places etc:smile2:

Then perhaps the good Folks of the Forum can point you in the right direction as they have done for myself.

Thankyou Alfie!
im starting to look on my grandads side as we have very little information on them. My gt grandad was SAMUEL HICKEN b22.12.1903 d.16.04.1965 and as far as i am aware he was born in birmingham. His wife my gt grandmother was ANNIE REEVES b05.12.1903 d07.04.1979 and she was born in county Tipperary, Ireland. i dont know when she moved to birmingham.
My gt grandads father was (as far as i know) G. T. HICKEN. I found an entry in the NATIONAL ROLL OF THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 which says:

HICKEN G. T. Pte., Royal Warwickshire Regt.
Volunteering in Jan. 1915, he proceeded to the western Front in the following March. There he took part in the Battle of Neuve Chapelle Hill 60, Ypres and Festubert, and was severly wounded in action at Loos in September 1915. He was invalided home, and in June of the following year was discharged as medically infit for further service. He holds the 1914-15 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals.

That is all that i know. My grandad said that they lived at Kingsthorpe Road, which is warstock i think. They moved into that house in about 1938ish and that house was in the family until my uncle Ted (born Samuel Edwin Hicken 10.04.1932-04.09.1995)died.. SAMUEL and ANNIE had 8 children JOYCE (B1928 lived about a day), MARGARET (11.05.1930 dont know when she died), SAMUEL (as above), EMILY (11.05.1933 D?), DENNIS BERTRAM (20.12.1934 d24.01.1996), STANLEY GEORGE (BMAY 1937 D29.09.1946) KIETH JAMES (B17.05.1940) and TREVOR STEPHEN(17.02.1944) and that is my grandad. That is all i know about my grandads side so to me they are quite a mystery. i would be really grateful of any help on them.thankyou very much!!!:beam:;):457:

The only B'ham birth I could find was for Samuel Hicken 1902 J/F/M.

Sure your year is correct?

Do you have his birth certificate ? Please say yes because that will have loads of info on:grinsmile:

The date i have been given is 22.12.1903 its not 100% i dont think. His middle name may have GEORGE. he died 16.04.1965 and married ANNIE REEVES but i dont know the date of the marriage. I have asked my grandad everything i can think of asking but from what he says these types of things weren't disccussed for whatever reason.

These were the only two that came up both mariage and birth for years from 1900 (not just for B'hm but the whole country).
