I am hoping that Terry or someone can help me with regiment of my grandfather.....Ernest John Williams born Herefordshire 1892....he was still living in Hereford in 1901, after that date I know nothing of his movements until he married my grandmother Winifred Causer.....I received the photo late last night off my younger brother and its the first time I have seen my grandfather, he died a few weeks after I was born.
the photo isn't in a good condition but I am hoping that something on it may help someone recognise the regiment....also would the cane he is holding or the cord around his left shoulder represent a rank or something..thank you in advance of any info you can or cannot give me.

JKC. I cannot help you too much but the cord around his shoulder is called a lanyard and I believe that it represents Battle Honours of the Regiment.
There are various colours for various Regiments, White for infantry as it seemed to say on Yahoo Search. If it is possible to enlarge the cap badge or someone will recognise. The condition of the photograph I would say someone will come along and clean it up for you. I think it may be that " Other Ranks " carried a cane dueing the First World War.
Stick with it as I am sure that someone will come up with a far better answer than me.

Hello JKC

Is there chance of a better scan of the cap-badge? It looks a lot like the Army Service Corps.

Regards

Terry

Thanks all for your help.....I don't think I can get a better scan...but will try.....another item I noticed late last night that he has spurs on his boots. ta again

I have googled the basic shape of the badge but can't see anything close. He is obviosly Cavalry or maybe horse artilery. He also has ammunition pouches, not sure if that is standard issue or could he be in a caribinier regiment (carbines). can't be much more help.
