Help pse - newspapers and archives Birmingham

although I have been doing genealogy for more years than I care to remember I have never ventured into the Birmingham area of research until today.

I have got a death certificate showing the lady who died needed an inquest which was held in April 1898. I know reports in newspapers are often easier to find than coroner's reports but is there an on-line site of Birmingham newspapers for the relevant date pse? Found nothing on the 19th Century newspaper site nor British Library newspapers.

Could someone also tell me what is the best record office/archive to contact re. Handsworth/Great. Barr area pse?

I have done research about the Hamstead/ Handsworth district, and all the records have been in Birmingham Central Library. The best way to look at a Coroners report from his inquest into a death is still the Central Library. They hold the cuttings of the newspaper reports. My husband's gt.gradfather drowned in a canal in Handsworth and as we have never looked at the official Coroner's Papers makes me wonder if they are held elsewhere, but the library will tell you.There is a closure period of 1 year, but you are clear of that.

Thank you so much for your helpful reply. I admit I was puzzled by Birmingham records and their exact location. I have never looked before at Coroner's records always finding the newspaper report quite adequate for what I needed.
