GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
my aunt and uncle george and catherine baker were landlords of two pubs in the 1940s in aston.
my problem is i only know half the name of both of them.
one they called the duke and the other the shoes. i think one of them could have been in
catherine street but not sure.
is there any way i can find the full names of these pubs.

hi lynne...there was a duke of york..duke of cambridge...something horseshoes and probably a few more...if someone could cross reference the names with some of the possible pubs in the kellys you may strike it lucky...hope you do...

theres a three horseshoes in catherine street, and a duke of york in aston road.

The only pub listed in Catherine St in the 1940s was at no 15 The Three Horseshoes . Landlords were

1944 Harry Kent

The Duke pubs listed by name in the 1944 Kellys were:

*Duke of Edinburgh, Geo. Wallis, 60 Dudley rd 18
Dtike of Wellington, Alfd. Hy; Sherwood, 143 Wainwright St .
*Duke of Wellington* Harry Whitefield, 355 Monument rd
Duke of York, Frank Arth. Etheridge, 213 Aston rd 6
Duke of York, Ed. Ernest Ford, 16 Hookley Mil 18
Duke of York, Benj. Green, 13 Duke st .
Duke of York, Bertram Jn. Hayler, 1 Lordswood rd. Harborne 17
The same ones were listed in 1940, 43, 44, 49 and 50, and none had a Baker listed as landlord. However sometimes pubs were not listed by name, but just as retail brewer. However I could find no George or Catherine Baker listed as in business , but not all landlords were listed in the commercial list (!!???). they could alos have been in the otherpub in one of the years I do not have directories of. There seems to be no catherine & george Baker together in what is a pub in 1945 or 1950 on th electoral rolls, though, of course they might not have been living on the premises.

thanks for that,at least half of my problem is solved,thats him at the three horseshoes, maybe they were at the duke earlier.

hi mike i wonder if you could check to confirm that there was a three horseshoes pub in cowper st..aston please...only ive got a pic of it and just wanted to know that the location on my caption is correct...

Only three horseshoes I can find listed by name are Coventry Rd, Pershore Rd, Summer lane, and Catherine st . I looked in 1936, 1956, 1940, and 1921. Of course it might not be listed by name in Kellys.
There is no Baker listed in 1936,7,8,or 9, There is a Horace Baker , landlord at the Duke of York , 13 Duke St in 1955 and 1956, but I assume that was just a coincidental name.
