Hello

I have recently been informed that my Great Uncle sreved in the great war however i have VERY limited information. Can anyone help find any information about his military career please? I know he served in the Royal Flying Corps.

His name is Henry Sanders, born in Aston, Birmingham, 6th April 1878. He was married to a Florence Boswell (28th Sept 1880). His father was an Edward Sanders from Coventry and his mother was a Mary Jane Eaton also from Coventry. Hi s son was an Alfred Henry Sanders born March 9th 1902.

I have attached my only photo of him!

Thank you in advance!

Paul

Hi Paul,

a quick look on the CWGC shows Two Harry Sanders killed in WW1 , Air Force, No Henry's shown.

Are you sure its Henry Sanders, do you have him on Birth Cert /Marriage cert ?

He born 1878 makes him 36 in 1914, a bit old for early enlistment ? A few more details posted may help further,
Best regards John Y

Paul, Welcome to the forum,
There are two H. Sanders listed on the Medal Roll who served in the R.F.C.

London Regt 2228, RFC 406956.
Royal Army Medical Corp 4754, RFC 13345

Medal Roll Cards have limited information there is nothing to confirm they may be the ones you're looking for.
Cannot find any details of either in Service or Pension Lists.

Paul do you know if he survived the first world war. If he did it always makes it harder to find info. Only one in three millitary records survived from the first world war.

Paul you probably know that Henry was living at 11 Johnstone Street, Birmingham on 1911 census and the Absent Voters Electoral Roll for 1918 has him at same address - Service number 196720, 2 Pte., 135 Squad., R.A.F.

He survived the war as he is at same address through to 1930 with other members of his family.

THANKS VERY MUCH ALL!!

The last info from bewdley....AWESOME! I did not have any of this info at all! Thank you once again!

Paul

Sorry Paul I can’t answer that one, but I’m sure someone else on the forum will be able to, the details I have are under the following heading –
Description of Service, Ship, Regiment, Number, Rank, Rating, etc., or recorded address – the exact entry for Henry is 196720, 2 Pte., 135 Squad., R.A.F.

Hmmm just realised it’s listed as RAF not RFC maybe that’s of significance.

does anyone have a link to this absent voters list please? After looking around the 135 sqn RAF was disbanded early in 1919 i think so i am sure he must have served somewhere during the war esp due to his age!

Thanks again!

Paul

He was Air Mechanic 2nd Class. There is a record dated 1918 for him on the Forces services records web site but they want to get some money off you before you can see it. I would say he was conscripted
