Does Any body Recall The Mc. Creas Family , Or The Robinsons , The Woods
The Gaskins , They Worked At H,P,S Sam, Gaskin Was A Comminiare Some Where With His Smart Regiment Unifofm , And Colin His Son Was In The Tank Regiment And I Went In The Ist Bat, Royal Waricks , At The Same Time ,

:) Astonian. Don't remember the jellied eels place but I met someone yesterday who came from Park Lane. His name is Ken Hillier and I have his sister Elsies phone no. Will give her a bell later and mention those names to her. Her cousins were the Eggisons. She is going to send me some photo's of her old neighbours next week. Albert Eggison worked at HP sauce for years. There is a photo of him on the HP sauce thread. Bye for now. Jean.:)
 
Hi Astonian. My husband remembers Hawkins jellied eels. He used to sell them at the dog track. I love them and cockles and welks Pete hates them. Bye. Jean.:)
 
Jean, one of our neighbours used to sell cockles mussels whelks he kept them in the bath. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...Cat
 
:redface: As long as it wasn't in the goosunder I'm not bothered. Pete used to eel fish and I would do them myself but it took too long for them to die. He tried several ways but I couldn't let him do it any more. He only killed them because I love the taste. Bye Cat. Jean.:cry:

We have done his before about a couple of years ago

I knew the the person who ran that shop very well, in fact she was my best mates Mother and she had a stall down at Perry Barr Dog Track and my Mate John and myself use to work for her on the weekend and do the washing up. They also had a place just behind the Bullring where we used to go Saturday Mornings and help prepare the Eels and the rest of the Shell food and it was delivered in Dustbins and they would be full of live eels and by the time we went home they were all ready for sale.
She also had a Dustbinthem full of Salt to put on her hands to hold the eels as she dispatched them:)I wrote all this before it must be somewhere on the Forum

Sadly my Mate John died on Christmas Eve about 38 years ago he fell taking drink up stairs to his pregnant Wife

No she always wore a Hat and lived in Erdington off the Ridgeway:)

I agree Astonian, Perry Barr has changed out of all recognition - and not for the best. Just concrete monstrosities mostly.
Perry Barr Greyhound Track's still there though and Birchfield Harriers has moved to Perry Barr park, entrance (I think) in Church Lane. I used to do athletics there when I was at school and trained at times with Dianne Leather, remember her?

I used to go to Hawkins for shellfish in the very early sixties I think it was. They had a high counter and there was always salt, vinigar, pepper and cayanne pepper on the counter.

Hi - Yes, I remember it well. We had a shop not far from it on Birchfield Road, we would often go there especially after a visit to Aston Cross cinema. My Mom always bought jellied eels in a big tub, Whelks and periwinkles. There was also oyster and prawns, there was salt and vinegar and cayenne pepper on the bar by the window. It was a busy place on a Friday and Saturday. No Chips, no burgers just fish and shellfish.
