Hancox & Berrow?

alandeej

knowlegable brummie
Hi, my Grandads name was William Hancox, and my Nans maiden name was Berrow, both came from Aston area.
Here are some names to see if anyone knows the names;
Reuben Hancox,
Harry Hancox,
Morris Morgan,
Ruby Burns (nee Berrow)
I know that my Grandad was in WW1 and was wounded in 1916, he also got married to my Nan in 1916, the same year my dad was born (there was a war on) lol!:D
My Grandad was also a 'Bookie' Turf Accountant, and my Nan ran her own chip shop in Hockley in 1930's next door to Cannings in Great Hampton Street!

May be a family connection here from the 1891 Census:

Place: Aston -Warwickshire
Civil Parish: Aston
Ecclesiastical Parish: St James
Address: 2 Vauxhall Grove

Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born BURROWS Mary A Head W F 71 Living On Own Means Warwickshire - Birmingham
HANCOX Lizzie E Niece S F 23 Companion(Em'ee) Warwickshire - Leamington
HANCOX William B Nephew S M 22 Hse Agent(Em'ee) Warwickshire - Leamington

Not my family just helping... could be a transcription or phonic error on Burrow.

A William Hancox married FLorence M. Berrow in Birmingham 1916 Jan to Mar Quarter vol 6d page 362.
Because of your mention of Turf Accountant (bookie), I was wondering if your nan was connected to the Berrows, who opened the Rum Runner nightclub in Birmingham in the 1960's. Those Berrows were bookies and had many shops around Birmingham. Ray and Don Berrow were two of the brothers. Ray's sons Paul and Michael Berrow took over the Rum Runner and managed Duran Duran. The Berrows also owned Snobs nightclub.

In 1925 William and Florence May Hancox were living 1 ct. 17 Great Hampton St. They had the same address in 1930. In 1935 they were at 12 Great Hampton St.

Yes they are my grandparents, my dad was born 11th August 1916. Yes my nan is conected to the Berrow's brothers who owned 'Rum Runner', and managed 'Duran Duran.
I think Ray & Don's father is Oscar Berrow which is my great grandads brother. My nan came from Aston, but my great grandad Harry Berrow's family came from Much Marcle & around that area.
I drawn a blank on my grandad, all I know is he had a younger brother called Rueben Hancox.
I know my nan's side and in contact with my nan's sisters daughters.
I'm trying to get information from my mother who is 83, but we had a fall out 2 yrs ago and we are building bridges at the moment.
I think my grandad was in the Worcester regiment in WW1, I know he was wounded in 1916, and I have found photo's of Ypres (I think thats how you spell the name)?
I've tried Worcester regiment web page and drawn a blank. I know my nan told me that my grandad sent his uniform back with a note saying his heart wasnt in it! lol

This could be your granddad and Reuben in the 1891 census,, but Reuben is given as being 4 and william as 2. It might be that your grandad treated reuben as his younger brother, even though he was slightly older

Alan, the Christmas card you posted is printed RAF do you think William could have transferred to the RAF from the Worcs. Regt. Worth investigating I think.

Hi Alan,

The electoral register for 1935 does show that address. It shows 12 and a 1 in brackets Great Hampton Street. Nice to know you have that Berrow connection. I knew Don well and did keep in touch with him for quite a time.
As regards to the military records for William Hancox, I'm finding it difficult to nail him. You could start a new thread 'William Hancox W.W.1 Worcester Regiment'. There are some people on here that are very good at finding military records.

You maybe right! You never know who you are related to, and that is why I'm sruggerling to find out about my Hancox family.
All I know about my grandad is that he was tall, light fair hair hair and blue eyes, with a deep dimple.
He was also involved with Joseph Chamberlaine, Mr Lucas & Canning as I have a photo of them all sat at a table in Birmingham town hall around the 1920's. I sent the photo to Mr Chinn and had it published in his 'Brummagem' mag.
My father told me about Pat Roach's family and Dennis Sullivan, but I was too young and was too much into pop music to be bothered.
Now I'm in my 40's and my children are asking me about family tree's.
