Hello,
I am researcing my family but am totally stuck on Moms' side. Mom was born Alice Maud Groves in 1899 daughter of William Groves and Emma Groves (born Harding) and living at 7 back 40 Sheep Street. When Mom married in 1919 they were living at 51 court 4 Summer Lane.
Mom had a brother Albert Groves probably a few years older than her, Mom also had, I believe, a half brother who emigrated to Canada.
Any possible link to these would be most helpful.
Regards, Alan

Hi Alan,
The 1901 census entry for Wolverhampton may be a bit of a red herring(sorry Michael)

The people in the 1901 could possibly be William Groves/Emma Jane Hancher who married Wolverhampton 1889 and are on the 1891 census,Wolverhampton William Groves age 23 b Dorchester and
Emma Jane Groves age 24( born 1867 Wolverhampton),
There is birth record for Alice Groves born 1897 Wolverhampton.

Alice Maud Groves was registered born in Birmingham in March 1900( this quarter includes January/Feb/March so if she was born December 1899 she could have been registered following year).
reference 6d 57

Coincidentally a William Groves married an Emma Harding in Birmingham North (which includes Aston/ Erdington) in 1925

Thank you all for your interest and comments.
Moma P,
There isn't a Robert Westwood in my tree untill 1937 but I will check again, Many Thanks.

John,
Sorry John I've not heard of Brian Harding.

Michael,
Thanks Michael but I don't think that this is them.

Alberta,
Many thanks, you are correct, Mom, Alice Maude Groves, was born 7th Dec 1899 and they were living in Sheep Street at the time, I got this off her birth certificate. When she married in 1919 they were living in Summer Lane. She had an older brother, Albert Groves and, I believe, a half brother named Groves.I can't find a single Alice Groves aged 1 on the 1901 census, I found two Alices' aged 2 years but neither seem to fit the bill.
The 1925 marriage of Emma Harding to William Groves is interesting, I have come across this and have sent for a copy of the marriage certificate.
As Mom had a half brother then William Groves had a previous wife or partner. Now say he was married and left his wife ( or she died) and took up with Emma Harding but did not (or could not if his first wife was alive)
marry her but waited till 1925. The ages on the marriage certificate should clear this up. I await the post with some trepidation.
Watch this space!!
Thanks to you all, Alan

I would be very interested in the outcome Alan.
To have William Groves marrying Emma Harding in 1925 might be a coincidence if it were in another part of the country but seems strange that it should be Birmingham North.

Well, I've had a copy of the marriage certificate of Emma Harding and William Groves married in 1925. What a shock, both are aged 63 and are down as widow and widower, the address is exactly the same as when mom was married so they are my grand parents and were obviously not married when Mom was born. I am now intrigued as to the story, presumably they both left living partners (or at least one of them did) and set up home together but could not marry untill both previous partners were dead.
Alan (in shock)
