Forgot to mention that my Uncles parents lived at the wharf, perhaps they were caretakers or something similar?

I've been unable to see the pics you posted but would love to see them... My ancestors - name Hatton - lived and had a shop at (I think) 60 Grosvenor St West from the turn of the 20th century. My dad remembers it - and he was born in 1928 (in Whittall St). I'd be interested to know if anyone has any details about it.

in kellys 1932 directory - mrs annie hatton 26 grosvenor street west. draper
in 1933 same address mrs annie hatton shopkeeper
in 1936 same address mrs annie hatton shopkeeper

To add to Shera's information , at 26 Grosvenor st west:
1915 Lamp dealer under a Miss Gray
1921 Mrs Nellie Hatton, draper

In 1920-22 the electoral roll just lists William Hatton,
1925 There appears to be some entries missing (nos 16-34) on the online roll , so no listng
1927 Annie Hatton
1930 Annie Hatton, Ivy Young, Ellen & Margaret Carroll
1935 Annie Hatton, Ellen & Margaret Carroll
1939 Ellen Carroll.

My family lived in Grosvenor Street West - Alfred & Mabel Holyoak with their children, Edna & Alfred. This would have been 1940s. My brother & sister were born in Ruston Street.

Thanks for that Sylvia, must try and get a copy!

By the way, I wonder if the title of this thread could be corrected to it's proper name - Grosvenor Street West??

my first shot and I haven't a clue how to go about it, I cant open the pictures of the union flour mill unfortunately, I do believe from my eldest sister that our greatgrandfather Arthur dowdeswell king was something to do with the flour mill, he was a miller. his daughter married my grandfather harry gill who lived in friston street, is there a trade directory that might show his name and occupation pertaining to the mill.

If you tell me when he was around I will see if I can fin d him in the approriate directory. But , unless he was THe miller, it is likely that he will not be mentioned in directories (but still worth looking)

thank you for your prompt reply, im not at all sure about him , the only fact I have from census and a trade directory is the following. in 1881 he was a lodger, apprentice baker. in Birmingham 1891 he,s a baker working from home in Birmingham, he marries in between these dates in 1885 then in 1895 he,s in trade directory as a paraffin and oil dealer also the same in 1892 So I assume he was a miller or baker by trade or profession before and after he was a paraffin and oil dealer.
its all a bit confusing I must admit and all are family stories, one of which says he was a partner in the mill. my family the Gills are all from Birmingham. THANK YOU

He is listed in the 1892-97 directories (which probably refers to 1891-1896) as a paraffin oil dealer at 2 Sherbourne St, but hew has gone by 1899. there is an Arthur King, boot & shoe maker in 1904, but , going up to WW1, I could find no other Arthur Dowdeswell King

thanks for your help sir,0n another tack, is there any reference to the early police force records in Birmingham if I wanted to look up a constable at the turn of the century, and do you know why I couldn't open photos of the union mill on this site. swallowtail.
