Grocers/confectioners: 57 Guildford Street, 1920's-30s

modgee

knowlegable brummie
Does anyone remember, or have any info about a shop at 57 Guildford Street, please? I am specifically looking for any info or pictures for the period 1920s-1930s, when my relatives ran it, but any information would be welcome. Kellys Trade Directory lists the shopkeeper as Miss Jane Hillitt around 1933 -1935. She was my gran's sister. I'm told that their mother Clara Hillitt had the shop before this. The Hillitt family are shown on the electoral roll living at 57 Guildford Street in 1925 and were still there until possibly late 1930's.

I would like to know if anyone remembers the name of the shop, and what sort of items were sold in the shop? I do know that they sold sweets and tobacco; I believe it may have been a grocers as they also sold bags of sugar. Some time before the 1920s, it was ran by a Mrs. Jackson. Any information about the history of the shop would be welcome.

Thanks, Jools

I remember the shop Modgee. It was at the begining of the hill up towards Clifford Street on the left. I don't remember ever going in there as we lived next door to a similar shop lower down (Rudhall's, number 24. You can just see it on the right of the Guildford Street picture, mentioned below, with the poster on the wall). The shop you are asking about was a grocers, ie sold grocery, sweets, cigarettes, sweets, etc., It was similar the my great gran's shop, number 29, shown on this thread:

This shop had gone by the thirties. Also on that page is a picture of Guildford Street. If you look carefully you can see the awning of your shop, just at the bottom of the hill bit, on the left, after a parked van.
There was another grocers a bit further up on the right which I did go into. They had a fruit machine which they didn't seem to mind older kids playing on.
