Do you mean just to search on their site or to order? If it's the latter then I'm fairly certain you can still order a certificate but just not through the online ordering form.
 
Searching for a birth reg, and a date is required (mandatory). The drop down dates run to 1934, then 1984 onwards.

You can order by telephone. However, if you click on place an order (right hand side) you can manually fill in those details which you get from freebmd. I've just gone partway through the process for a birth for 1966 and had no errors so I assume it would complete.
