I am corresponding with a lady living in the south of England who is asking for help in identifying a place of burial and a church where a wedding took place. These are her words. Can any member kindly give her any guidance or further information, please?
(This was the last day on which bombs fell on Birmingham)
So.. any ideas, please, on place of burial for these two unfortunate ladies - and also the husband/father - and whether the Mission Hall still stands?
Thanks.
Chris
My husband's great grandmother was Jane Greenway (nee Maycock) who died with her daughter, Winifred Greenway as a result of a German bombing raid on 31 July 1942. A bomb fell on 366 Stockfield Road where they were living, killing Winifred outright and injuring Jane who died a week later on 6 August at Selly Oak hospital as a result of her injures.
We have found references to them both in the Ancestry Death Index which provides details for Jane (died age 71, Birmingham, Volume 6d, page 473) and Winifred (died age 34, Birmingham, Volume 6d, page 31). We understand from my husband's aunt (Jane Greenway's grandaughter) who attended Jane's funeral, that both Jane & Winifred were buried together in a grave occupied by Jane's husband (William Greenway) who had died the year previously in 1941. She said that the grave was under a tree in a local cemetery but unfortunately can't remember the name of it. We are visiting the area in mid April and wanted to try and see the grave so any help that you an give in that respect would be much appreciated. In addition to the Ancestry reference above, we have also found a reference to Jane and Winifred's death in the Acocks Green History Society web site and of course the Birmingham Air Raids Remembrance Association. Jane and William Greenway were married at The Mission Hall Causeway, Yardley on 16 August 1900 (another place we would like to try and find if it still exists) so it is possible that they may have been buried in the near vacinity.
