Green family, boat family Rowley Regis

Greenfamily

proper brummie kid
My fathers family name is Green. I recently found that his grandfather was William Green, address given as Portway, Rowley Regis. My dad lived at Rounds Green Oldbury. William married Ann Maria Round and gave his occupation as boatmen. He was born 1844 to John Green. Apart from their marriage certificate, I have not been able to find William or Ann anywhere. Has anyone any knowledge of a boat family that might fit?

Welcome Greenfamily and thank you for your query. I’m sure this is an oversight, but on this forum we expect members to use the common courtesies of “please” and “thank you”. Members give their time voluntarily to help others, so a please or thank you goes a long way.

Hopefully members will be able to help you.

It's a tricky one with boat people and a common name such as Green.

Have you seen William's (the son) birth or marriage certificate? With so little to go on what details do you have for this William that make you think he was the son of William & Ann Maria?

Thank you for your reply. Yes I have William the sons birth certificate and marriage certificat, and William and Ann Maria’s marriage certificate. You are right about Green being a difficult name to trace!

Greenfamily, you say they had a son - William - born 1867 - but i cannot find a William Green born in 1867 with a mothers maiden name of "Round".

William.

There's a William Green registered 1867 Bham, mmn Rowley.

And a William Round registered 1876 West Bromwich, mmn Round.

But as you say not one that matches.

I think we need a few more details to try to connect the two.

Who did the younger William marry, where and when?

A little hard to make out but it all fits together as you say but it doesn't help, which you don't need me to tell you.

The best I can find are a couple of death registrations for an Ann Maria Green in West Bromwich - 1894 & 1900.

These are the only 2 traces I can find. Nothing on any census, that’s why I wondered if they lived on a boat and never included. He was 19 when they married; she was 28. They were married 13 years before son was born, yet no trace of any other children. Thank you to everyone for joining my search.

The information on Williams birth certificate is a little too small for me to read, but doesn't it say 1876 at the top and not 1867 as in your post (5).

William.

You could purchase the certificates to see who the informant is but that can become expensive when you're guessing and there's no guarantee it will be significant.

Have you see the William Green born Northfield living in Eel St, Sudbury in 1861? He is the right age and is a labourer (as marriage certificate).

In 1851 this William Green is living in Northfield with his family. His father's name is John Green, a labourer.

He also doesn't seem to appear on subsequent censuses.

And probably a coincidence but I see on the 1901 census William Green is listed as a brick makers labourer.

A brother of the William Green I mention in post #16 is listed as a brickmaker in 1881 & 1891.

Ooooh! So sorry to mislead......it is 1867. Thank you for spotting this error on my part.

I sent for an Ann Maria Green Death certificate. It sounded about right, but it wasn’t. I like the sound of the Northfield one. I’ll look at that, thank you.

Thanks, I will look at all suggestions. Your fresh pair of eyes could see what I can’t.

Interesting, I’ll check on that one too, thank you.
