Granville Street Ladywood

I am new to the Forum and it is great to see the entries for Granville Street. My family (The Fairs) have a long connection with this street as 4 generations of Fairs have lived here, from approx. 1911 to 1960, at 1 back of 43. My great grandmother Eliza Fair lived here with her younger children at the time of the 1911 census. I would love to see a map from that time. My grandparents Harry and Winifred Fair then lived at the house and had 5 sons, Jack, Harry, Len, Patrick and my father Thomas (Tom). Following the death of Winifred in 1955/56 my parents Tom and Eileen occupied the house and me and my siblings, until 1960. My siblings David and Karen Fair attended St Thomas's school. We then moved to the more "rural" area of Bartley Green. I understand that the back to backs in Granville St were demolished in approx. 1965.

Hello Trude welcome to the forum , I vaguely remember the name Fairs , I lived in William Street from
1955-69 . I assume you were at the Tennant St end of Granville St , nearer Broad St , do you remember the swagmen the Hunts Roy and Bobby on the corner of Tennant St they used to supply the fairs. I never realised there was as many coconuts in the world till I helped them unload the lorries to take them down to the cellars there was millions of them. How old would David have been in the 60's before you left

I was only 4 years old when we left Granville Street in 1960. I have limited memories of my time there but can remember the courtyard and brew house and crossing Broad Street to sit in the garden by the Hall of Memory. My brother cut his foot on glass when paddling in the fountain in Chamberlain Square. I have an old rent book which shows that we lived in Court 5 number 1 house. This was known as 1 back of 43, Granville St. The rent was 14 shillings and 9d in 1959. I will ask my siblings if they have any photographs and will try and upload them.

dont rush trude take your time...just didnt want you to miss that post with the map on:)

Trude, your place was close to where my friends and workmates the McMahons lived at that time, I'm not sure of the number but I think it was between Tennant Street and your place, it was one of the houses with the front door at the roadside.
On the map also I can see where I worked at the garage, alongside No 25 there was a passage (shown by the dotted line), we used to drive down there and turn left into an open yard and right into the workshop, the showroom and office were in front, I can't really make out the plan, seems
to be No 27 or maybe 25 and 27 combined.
No 21 was a private house, a bookies but illegal in those days, also in that row there was a café and a pub.

trude did you see the map mike posted for you on post 50

Lyn if you look at that map in post 50 the street running across the bottom of Stoke St is William St , number 74 was where I lived at that time there was no 73 that must have been absorbed into what we used to call the woodyard on the map it's called a storage yard . The electrical warehouse almost opposite the end of William St was Donovan Electrical Co , which in the late 70's merged with it's sister company G0thic Electrical in Henrietta St which by this time were both owned by the Thorn Electrical and they changed their name to ERD. We moved from Henrietta St in 1984 out to Kenrick Way West Bromwich

Eric was the surname definitely McMahon , I knew a family by the name of McGuire that lived on the third floor of that unnumbered building at the bottom of court no 4 it was classed as a halfway house at the time a family living on each of the three floors, I'll never forget that building one lad I played with from there dropped a toy cowboy gun over the bannister landed straight on the top of my head . I don't know whether it was coincidence but after that I spent two weeks in Little Bromwich hospital with meningitis

Eric I think the pub you refer to was Mrs Neal who ran an off licence , went in there a few times for two pints in the bottle for a woman who lived in William St

Eric I do recall my parents having friends called the McMahons. My sister and I definitely played with a young girl called Angelique McMahon.

I wonder if Angelique is still about, she was the daughter of my workmate Bill, only a baby last time I saw her, also worked with Bill's brother John and their mother who did the cleaning and car valeting at Watsons in Broad Street.

Hi there, I am looking to see if anyone remembers the Parry family who lived at 3 back of 39 Granville Street from the 40's until they passed away in the 60's - their names were George and Isabella; they were my great-great grandparents. I've heard of a couple of things about George from my family that he was hit by a van not long before he passed away - whether this happened or not i'm unsure it's just what I've heard from my family as I said. It would be nice to hear a reply/response if anyone remembers this family.

Thanks,

Thomas Parry

I can remember my mother taking me to see uncle Billy and auntie floss , they used to keep chickens in their little garden in williams street. Uncle Billy worked on the market. Mom was closest to uncle Leonard who we visited often and his second wife May. When George died Isabella went to live with her son Albert for a short time in Kingstanding . Ibwould love to see any old photos you might have.

I remember Bill and Floss Parry , I lived at 74 William St 1955-69 . They lived just up the street on the opposite side up an entry from us . Floss had a brother Len Jones who was married to Edith I fetched errands for Edith when I was a nipper

Sure thing - I'll see what photos I have available. Are you on Ancestry? If not, I would love to know any information you have about your mother. Do you remember anything about Billy and Floss' children?

Hi Thomas, my mom was born in Benacre street in 1906 27th July, she married in 1926, lived in Duke
street for a short time before moving to Granville street next door to our grand patents Isabella and George. Mom went on to have 10 children only 6 of us survived 4 boys and two girls.
I'm not on Ancestry. I have attached photos of mom and baby Len, mom and May, photo of Isabella
on own her own, my mom & dads wedding day.

I knew her date of birth and that she passed away in 1986. I knew she had a son Leslie as Bill and Floss' son Albert (my granddad) had met him in the Hubert Road Social Club in Selly Oak. Which one of the children are you as so far I have discovered John, Leslie, May, Margaret and Albert (the other children I could not find - possibly name mis-spelt on Ancestry or was not registered) - I now know that May was one of the 4 that passed away.

Just to query - on the photo with your mom and May; is it May the sister or Len's wife May??

I know your mom Lily was one of seven children - Isabella (the real name of your aunt May in the photo with your mom), George, Albert, William "Bill/Billy", Charles and Leonard. I know you have bits of info on May, Billy and Len but do you know anything about the other siblings?
