I am in search of the Gough's Arms Perry Barr/Aldridge.
Wikipedia says it was renamed the Beacon Arms:-

Here we are saying it was renamed the Boars Head

I have in my family tree Mountfort Clarkson 1789 to 1860 he was landlord of the Gough Arms at least between 1841 and 1851 according to the census. He is the Great Great Grandfather of Lt Cdr Simon Idiens Stepfather of Actress Kristen Scott Thomas and also a direct descendant of William the Conquer via the Montford family.

The Montford Clarkson family link is associated with the Gough Arms in Great Barr. I now wonder if there were two Gough Arms. Although Perry Barr and Great Barr are relatively close they are two distinct areas. Viv.

This suggests to me there might have been two Gough Arms - see bottom of penultimate paragraph

“catalogues available at the Gough Arms, Perry Barr and Great Barr” .

My Mistake I meant Great Barr,
 
And an important feature of any community Marie.

There was a Gough Arms Inn in Great Barr from at least 1828. Viv.

This 1940 article which appeared in the Walsall Advertiser confirms that the Gough Arms Great Barr was renamed The Beacon Arms. It was probably renamed when the Scott family acquired it from the Goughs, two well known families in the Great Barr and Perry Barr areas.

At the time of the article the original inn was being demolished and the new structure shown in the drawing was to replace it. It’s situated on the Birmingham Road. The road was also wid3ned at the time of the rebuild.

The last image from Google Streetview shows the building today; currently a Harvester.

16/2/1856 Staffordshire Advertiser announced a black horse found. Payment of expenses to be made to Thomas Clarkson of the Beacon Inn, Great Barr

31/8/1864 London Evening Standard reported on a pigeon shooting match at Beacon Inn, Great Barr

31/5/1865 Walsall Free Press reported Thomas Clarkson, landlord of the Beacon Inn was robbed of a saw from his yard

28/6/1862 Aris’s Gazette announced the death of the youngest son of Thomas Clarkson of the Beacon Inn, Great Barr

7/1/1865, 29/3/1865 and 29/1/1868 Sporting Life announced pigeon shooting at Beacon Inn, Great Barr

1/2/1866 Aris’s Gazette, landlord Thomas Clarkson charged with breach of licence

5/6/1897 Walsall Observer, landlord Mills of Beacon Inn Great Barr applied for an extension of hours during Whit Monday

19/3/1910 Walsall Advertiser announced the agreement of an application made by F. S. Wilson Smith to reverse the position of the bar and smoke room and to insert a window to supervise the approach to the house by carters

23/8/1913 Walsall Advertiser reported landlord John Pritchard was summoned for selling alcohol outside licensing hours

19/11/1927 Walsall Observer reported an application was approved for Mitchell’s and Butlers to remove a dividing wall between the bar and the tap room to make one large room.

Some further snippets from the British Newspaper Archive relating to the Gough Arms Inn, Great Barr. These, with the previous post’s extracts, show that the change of name from the “Gough Arms Inn” to the later “Beacon Inn/Arms” was likely to have taken place between 1853 and 1856. Viv.

8/12/1828 Aris’s Birmingham Gazette M Clarkson gave house warming at Gough Arms Inn, Great Barr

30/9/1833 Aris’s Birmingham Gazette announced a meeting at the Gough Arms Inn, Great Barr about the making of a turnpike road from north of Quarry House to Perry Barr

16/3/1844 Staffordshire Advertiser announced the sale of livestock from Chapel Farm at Gough Arms Inn, Great Bar
6/3/1847 Staffordshire Advertiser announced a sale of farming stock and implements at the Gough’s Arms Inn, Great Barr

24/9/1853 Staffordshire Advertiser reported Mr Mountfort Clarkson of the Gough Arms Inn, Great Barr eldest daughter, Mary Ann was married

His son Thomas Edwin Clakson was also a farmer and publican. He is stated as living in Aldrige, Walsall but mainly Great Barr

Mountford Clarkson's Daughter Sophia Clarkson married John Idiens the Station master at Camp Hill Railway Station and Hotel Keeper of the Midland Hotel in Bristol, The Idiens family being the landlords of many pubs in the area.
 
The Russell Clarkson that wrote to the Paper is Edwin Russell Clarkson 1870
