Following on from the revelation that Len (Lencops) lived next door to my great grandfather in Yardley, I've started this thread to move it away from the 'Edburgha's' thread under 'churches'.

Len, what a smile you have brought to my face with your recollections. The fact that William lost a leg whilst working for the corporation has jolted the memories of several family members. The photo of Ellen and Mabel on the motorcycle was taken somewhere other than Yardley, that I understand, but the photo of the entire family (minus the elusive sibling Henry of course) I believe was taken at number 1 Charles Edward Road. With regard to William losing his leg, do you know what year this happened? I'd like to think that it was serious enough to be reported on and as such it may be that this 'story' is available from the archives somewhere.

There is a death entry for a Henry E C Goode in Bham in 1958 aged 71 which would make his approx year of birth 1887. reference 9c 709 JFM but maybe you have considered this for your elusive ancestor?

Hello Suzanne, thank you for your reply. Well now you have me questioning my search abilities through Ancestry as I can't find/see that record anywhere. This has me questioning if I am missing not only his death but also other things such as marriage.

Hi Barrie, got that one, thanks. In fact I've got everything up to 1911 Census, where he was still single, and now I have his death - thanks to Suzanne.

With him living until he was 71 then there's every chance that there is a whole family that the rest of his family are completely unaware of. I've ordered a death certificate so I'm hoping that it will reveal all ;)

Good Morning Steve, You say i brought a smile to your face, the info you posted astonished me! in that my childhood was brought back, there was Mom & Dad and 3 daughters and 4 brothers living in No3, i am the last born in 1929 i have a Sister Kathleen who is 96yrs young, the five other family members are all RIP including of course Mom who died at the age of 88yrs (1973) & Dad who died at the age of 71yrs (1951), i will ask Kath for any memories she may have. Len.

Hi Len do you know why the houses in Gladstone, Emily and Warwell roads have front gardens, albeit very small, but the houses in Charles Edward rd do not.

Hello Len, I'm off to Shropshire to meet Dad for lunch today, but will post some more photos later this evening. You may have seen on the 'St Edburghas' thread that I've now located the church where I believe Henry Edward Coleman Goode was married - St Giles in Sheldon. The first photo that I posted on that thread is, I believe, one of the same missing Henry.

Something happened between the family, of that I am sure, as he was never mentioned or discussed. My first thoughts were that perhaps he had died during the war and that the memory of him was too painful to discuss. Now that I know that he lived a full life and died in Birmingham the mystery has increased. I'm beginning to think that I should have named this thread 'Henry Edward Coleman Goode' rather than that of his father William but in any event, I never expected in my wildest dreams that I would be communicating with William's next door neighbour....and one with such a memory!

Robert, Emily Rd was named after the builders daughter, Gladstone after the politician and Warwell after a well said to have been used by soidiers in the Civil War, the builder wanted to name Chas Ed Rd after himself Charles Edward Lane but Brum Corporation vetoed the idea, Emily Rd. Gladstone & Warwell houses with small gardens are bigger in side with a hallway and dining room and large scullery aka kitchen and a big garden at the rear and higher rents of course!, when the Coventry Rd telephone/telegraph cables were put underground circa 1936/38 many householders in Emily Rd took in lodgers who were working on the project, i think the rent in Tramway Alley as Chas Ed was nicknamed was 5s/6d and rose to 11s/6d by 1966. Len. Add, The New Inn pub grounds and Crown Bowling Green were seperated from us by a 6ft 6in fence which ran the length of Charles Edward Rd.

Steve, Yes very familiar but much younger than i remember, i always remember Mrs.Goode as not being any taller than me when i was 8yrs and she always had her hair in a tight bun on the high back of her head, she wore a black blouse & skirt down to her ankles, she used to give me a slice of caraway seed cake which i did`nt like, i used to give it to Mom. Len.

Morning Steve, This my Mom Jessie Emma Copsey who with the help of out of work carpenters who lived in Charles Edward Rd converted the front room into a shop usually called a "Hucksters shop" she sold nearly every grocery product you can think of the young pic was taken at 18yrs, in the shop she is 75yrs young she opened in 1929 & closed in 1966 and she allowed credit or "strap" as it was known as. Len.

Steve, I have studied this pic and from the position of Henry`s left foot i think he is wearing his false leg what year was this pic taken, do you know?. Len.

Good Morning dottieau, Thank you for your interest, when the photos were taken few people had cameras so the photos are a revalation to me they take me back 73yrs to my childhood days and i hope there will more to come, i have more memories of my life and our neighbours to post, it is wonderful thread to me tempered with sadness that 5 of my siblings and Mom & Dad are RIP. Len.

I was thinking the same thing Len, the chair in the street was another give away, but I haven't a clue when it was taken. William's profession prior to working for the Corporation was a gardener which would seem to indicate that this was taken in Yardley if he is indeed sporting the artificial leg.

When the photo album finally came to light just a year or two ago I was equally amazed that I had been given such an insight into a time where my grandparents were courting. William was very strict with his daughters and had high morals so it couldn't have been easy for Henry at the beginning. In any event, they were all keen to record the relationship blossom.

Len, again, I believe this was taken towards the back of 1 Charles Edward Road. The child is unknown but there is every chance it is the daughter of the missing Henry Edward Coleman Goode.

So he is.....must book up with specsavers :grinsmile:

In that case there's every chance that William was sitting in the wheelbarrow outside his previous home on the Pershore Road, Northfield.
