I knew I'd read that there was a Mill in that area at one time, but could not remember where. I found this from a Heartlands news letter sent to me in 2008 . Hope this helps in some way and may answer some of the questions asked in this thread.
In our last newsletter Peter Hawker was asking for information about the ‘mountain’ in Spion Kop Recreation Park at the bottom of Mount Street.
This recreation ground is the filled in Mill pool of Nechells Park Mill, that was sited on the corner of Wharton Street and Mount Street. The mill was a ‘Blade mill’, for edge cutting tools. The mill building can be seen on the map it is on the right of the pool in Wharton Street.
I don’t know the exact date it was filled in but it was certainly done by 1901. The ‘mountain was certainly man made as it must have been earth that was left over from filling in the pond.
‘Spion Kop’ is Afrikaans – (a form of Dutch spoken in South Africa) and it means “a hillock” and that is exactly what that mound of earth is. The name came to this country after the Boer War (1899 – 1901).
