John, I'm sure this site has been mentioned previously, and I took a look........then dived in head first, and ended up in a right mess :oops: I realise that if its being recommended, then its a 'good' site to start on?
PS: If anyone has the book 'Geneology for Dummies' I would be only too pleased of a copy :)

Sue you could always ask John Houghton for advice ? I am sure he would be more than pleased to give some guidence to you. He's a regular visitor to the different archives. My only word of advice is, dont take anything for granted!! always prove the connections you make before you move on.   :D

There is a chrge to using Genes reunited only about a tenner I think, it is good for building a tree which I have done and yes I have made several contacts, one sent me this photo of his great great grandmother Ann Green (nee Bartlett) who is my great great great Aunt. I haven't even begun to work out his realtionship to me, but yes my family has grown considerably and I have found this forum site absolutely fantastic along with Gene Reunited
 
The annual fee for Genes Reunited is £7.50 and so far I have found descendants of three of my grandma's sisters and brothers, plus a couple of my granddads maternal side, and two or three more connections. It has improved considerably since John Colin's post in 2003, and I find it easier to negotiate now.

Also both John K Colin and fergie are right with the name of the site. It started as 'Genes Connected' (I was in from it's start) an extension to 'Friends Reunited' and as it grew they change the name to 'Genes Reunited' and as Sylvia also say they improved the site a great deal.

I'm also a full member of GenesReunited and find it a great help in finding family members. The one gripe I have about it is the 'Hot Matches' facility which automatically searches for matched names and birth years. Each month I plough through and delete dozens of John Smith's or George Davies' born 1863 etc - all born anywhere in the UK except Birmingham or other place indicated in my tree. It would be so simple for them to include place of birth to the search criteria.
