Hi,
A newbie here, wondering if anyone has any information on a great granma's family.
She was Hannah Gazey b 1880.

Her family were -
Dad - George Gazey b1847 ish Weston
Mum - Mary Ann Keates b1852 Bristol

Siblings -
Alice b1871
Mary b1874
William b1876
Hannah b1880
Sarah E b1883
George b?
John b1887
Eliza b1889
Robert Keates b1891
Henry Keates b1894
Charlott b 1896
James Keates J. b1899 Phew !

They lived at 36 Lawden Road Aston in 1901.

Hannah married William Frederick Drew - their son (our grandad ) was born at 'back of' 36 Lawden Road a few years later.

There's a family story about some brothers who were killed in WWI - so far I know George, Robert & Henry all served. George & Henry were killed & I have the casualty details from the War Graves site (my son is going Belgium on a school trip & hopes to visit at least one of the graves)

If anyone knows any more ?
Cheers

Wow - thanks for that. I found the WWI medal stuff online last week so I have black & white copies of those. Great to see the colour versions & so much clearer than mine too.

Felt quite emotional seeing the cards for all the brothers together.

Am I right in thinking the 14 star bit means Henry was in France in 1914 ?
And is the ret'd (1743 KR) something about King's Regulations which governed returning medals?

There was one for a James Gazey in the Royal Warwickshire -but not sure that's my James as there's no initials.

Hello Rosemarie,
My Gt.aunt, Rose, was married to George Gazey, they married 09/09/1906 at Holy Trinity Church. George was KIA 22/06/1916 his No was 36625.
Royal Welsh Fusileers. He is named on on the Loos Memorial panel 50-52.
Rose & George had one son, George Charles Gazey born 23/11/1906.
According to George's attestation papers this is his description :
5' 2" tall. Chest 37". Tattoo on left arm. he was a bricklayers labourer. He was in need of dental work .

NOTE: Mary married someone named SMITH. & address for her was 17 Pearson st, Balsall Heath. William was also at this address
Hannah ( Drew) was living at 36 Sandy Lane at some point. John was also at this address.
Robert was living at 17/87 Tilton Road
Charlotte & Alice were at 267 Herbert Road

Regards,
Margaret.

Thanks Margaret - thats great. We must be cousins by marriage about ten times removed or something then? :)

I've got some more dates/ addresses for the Gazeys (all on bits of paper).
Do you want me to post some more here or is there a personal message thingy I should use? (They were a big family weren't they!)

I found Henry Keates Gazey on the CWG site - he's buried near Ypres.

I'm sure this branch of the family is what my g-uncle talked about - he said he lost some male cousins in WW1 & their mother's hair went white overnight. He talked about George, Jim, Bob & Harry. Except these Gazey brothers were actually his uncles- but the younger ones weren't much older than my g-uncle so I thought perhaps he called them cousins?

George 1886 ?

I searched with just the christian name as i suspect it has been mistranscribed, you could send for this one but stipulate you only want it if the parents names are George Gazey/Mary Ann, maiden name Keates

George Gray 1st qtr 1886 Aston 6d 266

On FreeBMD it says 256, i looked at their original and to me it looks like 266 and Ancestry gives it as 266

The marriage Margaret mentions in her post --

George Gazey/Rose Minchin 3rd qtr 1906 Aston 6d 475

Looks like you have made a very good contact there with Margaret, pleased for both of you, it looks like she has all his Attestation papers etc, couldn't resist having a look myself

Thanks very much Bren - just skimmed over those - will have to print them out & have a proper look later.

Especially thanks for the Keates family - I'd only got as far as Mary's birth & couldn't find them (looking in BMD in Bristol).

Funny that Alice was born in L/Spa - that's where I grew up. And Weston is not far from there.

Interesting railway connection too - Hannah married into the Drew family & on that side Charles Drew (her father in law) was also from Bristol I think - and sometime between 1879 & 1903 started working on the railways. In 1903 he was living in Sandy Lane - so I guess these families knew each other before the wedding?

Smaller world back then I guess !

Oh and forgot to say -
Last night I looked up BMD for Robert Gazey - I think he got married in 1914 to a Sarah Jenkins and they seem to have had 5 kids between 1920 & 1928 (assuming their's is the only Gazey/Jenkins marriage ).

So he at least survived WW1.

Hello Bren & Rosemarie,

That is brilliant info that you have given us Bren...I have found it interesting but I am approaching the Gazey family through Rose Minchin
of course....I can tell you that Rose remarried on 01/03/1919 & went on
to have another son from this new marriage,,,sadly I do not know what
became of Rose & her family....isn't that always the case in family history ???

Margaret.
