Gates around Birmingham

I like to see gates on buildings or added to premises. There must be many examples of existing or long lost ones, impressive or functional and demonstrating different styles and periods.

This set of gates you wouldn’t want to see. They were at Winson Green Prison. Image dated 10/7/1979 from the Birmingham Daily Post. Now long gone. But were they repurposed ? Viv.

I took this photo of a gated alleyway in March 2016. Not a pretty or significant type of gate. It’s just securing the access to the rear of the properties in Branston Street in the Jewellery Quarter. I like the view through the gate with the series of arches along the alleyway and the promise of an interesting courtyard at the end.

The gate itself is a regular gate but the effort put in to create an arched wrought iron piece on top to block anyone climbing over it is quite something. Obviously a later addition to the plain gate. I was very surprised to see the wrought iron addition still in place, but Streetview shows it’s still there. Viv.
