Garratt Family Research

joejack

Brummie babby
Hello, I am very new to family research, but I am trying to trace the Garratt family who apparently lived at Coleshill House, Warwick in the 1930's.

I don't really know whether this website covers the area I am looking for, but thought I would give it a try as I am getting nowhere on my own!

I do hope some kind person will be able to help, either in directing me to the correct website or being able to help from this one! I now have to try and find out how to read replies, if any!!

Many thanks,

A very, very, newbie from "Up North"!

Hi Joejack,welcome to the forum.
Warwick is a bit off our patch, but to get started, you will need more details, such as christian names and dates of birth or approx years, then you may pick up the family members on ancestry. The census only goes to 1911, but if you can identify some of the younger family members, you may be able to work backwards.
If you want to start the research yourself, the best bet is to join Ancestry, findmypast or one of the genealogy site - ancestry were doing a free 2 week trial, that's useful to see if you want to carry on! Lots of us will tell you how addictive it becomes! And we do look at families outside Birmingham too,
Sue

HI JOEJACK
Welcome to our sight its a great sight and a good start on the subject of your garratts afew years ago we did abit of there family
about four years ago ; and if my memory serves me correctly its the same garratts whom owned a row of shops on the stratford rd way back then
all in arow and they had aboutfour or five shops in the row next to each other these was the old garratts there bussiness started to windle down by the late fifties and one remained until the sixties and finally went under an finished hey had alsorts of things they was selling and buying as well music instruments bikes otor bikes caravans you name it they was selling the lot so if you have got a name to start with get a look up on theelectrol roll for that period or an earlier cencus in brum for stratford rd which was highgate or camp hill as they was by the fly over that used to be there
they was there with some sons and they was not dodgy people either hey was honest and hard working family ;
if anybody tried to sell them any think they was on the blower to the police andbeleive they was caught and dealt with by the police ;
also there was garratt that worked at savekers in phillip st aston for years there was a picture of him , but not so long ago this site was hijacked and took alot of pictures off us so you will not find that one but if you go to the central libary or your local history or most libary keep all these info ;of cenucus

Hello Astonian,

I think I have sent my previous reply somewhere else! Can't get a grip of these forums.
Many thanks for your helpful reply, I will digest all the information you give and get back to see if I can ask for any further assistance.

Many thanks, Joejack
