GARDENERS ARMS, 58 BROWNING STREET, LADYWOOD

proper brummie kid
MY paternal great great grandfather William Gibbs was a publican at 58 Browning Street, Ladywood, Birmingham, in 1911 Census and his son Herbert was a barman. The pub was the Gardeners Arms. I am wondering if number 58 actually was a pub and my ancestors lived above it? I'd be interested in any photos or memories of Browning Street.

In the 1911 Trade Directory no 58 was listed as William Cook beer retailer.

Then 1912 Kellys, which would probably refer to 1911 lists William Henry Gibbs as the landlord of the Board Vaults, Bell St & 56 Worcester St. the pub in red on the c1889 map looks quite large, and would have expected the landlord to have lived above it

Dear Mike,
Thanks very much for this. That helps a lot.
I didn't know his middle name was Henry. Oddly, none of his prodigy was given either William or Henry as a name.
What is 1912 Kellys?
So he was the landlord of the Board Vaults?
I have him as landlord of the Gardeners Arms at 58 Browning St, Ladywood.
Bell St and Worcester Street - does that mean he had two pubs and was landlord of both?

Kellys is the name of a series of directories that covered Birmingham (and other parts of the country) up till the 1970s
