Cabbage storks, peas straight from the pod, blackberries, gooseberries, peppers, rhubarb etc... why do we cook them when they taste so much better raw? :?: :?:
Paul, exactly why I have my own smallholding ! All our fruit and veg is homegrown. You can't beat carrots, potatoes, beans, cabbage, rhubarb etc, straight from the ground, crunched and gnawed on as you collect them.
Our Hens don't lay eggs with little lions on them, but the difference in the taste with those in the High St. supermarkets is unbelievable. I also breed rare-breed sheep and pigs ! I'll let you know how they taste after I find a way of dispatching them without the kids knowing !!!!!
Not only do they taste better what about the smell of the earth on those veggies, eh?
Unfortunately, I don't have the room but I have friends with allotments who bring me lots of fresh goodies. My daughter keeps chooks in her back garden so we have plenty of those luverly fresh eggs you mention.
I can understand your kids feeling about the animals. Pigs are probably one of my favourites. Trouble is, bacon/pork is also my favourite meat.
I moan and groan continuously about the taste of food, I was beginning to think it was a victor meldrew affliction but now I realise I am correct. Den the bit about the eggs especially rings true with me. We buy FRESH FARM EGGS from our local hypermarket, but they are a sad reflection of those we buy when camping on a farm we know in Shropshire. We have a farmers market occasionally in Tamworth, we also get good eggs from there.
Paul I remember having my ear clipped for eating all the peas I was supposed to be shelling for Sunday dinner.......Didn't they taste nice!!! OUCH
When I was little I used to love to nibble at the sweet fleshy bit of pea pods, but my mum was horrified. These day they sell them in our market as "sugar snaps" or "mange tous" and you stir fry them.
When we had an allotment during WW2 we used to pick the brussel sprouts and put the stalks and top leaves in the pig bin or on a compost heap. Today in our market they sell brussel tops as an occasional alternative to broccoli or spring greens.
