free war time records from 5th to 11th may

Still going to normal searches......but I tried from my Ancestry page and scrolled down to military and all I had for 2 people was that card and it could be anyone as nothing to connect them to who you are after and another 2 nothing at all comes up.......I have yet to identify a relation on these free periods.

When I entered a WW1 relative who died in 1917 I got a list headed "VE Day Records" not a search page. I already have his details I was just trying the search out.
When I tried the WW2 relative who was in the navy i got normal search results.
A lot of WW2 records don't seem to be on Ancestry - some still covered by 100 year rule?

Thanks for the heads up, Lyn.

However – and it may well be just me – this offer seems to be a typical, smart-*rse, marketing ploy which implies much and provides little more than nothing.

For me, one or two searches DO provide outline details of a serviceman but, I suspect, nothing more than what you would get as a non-member or non-paid-up member when Ancestry is trying to draw you in. That includes a thumbnail of the records you really want to see which, when clicked on, takes you to an American site where either a further subscription is required (Fold3) or you're invited to go to Ancestry War Records. If you do the latter you start to go around the same loop again, all at the same time being required to spend money rather than enjoy free access for a few days, generously provided by Ancestry to mark an event of great significance and to respect those of our loved ones who sacrificed much.

I should be delighted to be proved wrong.

Chris

Not all military records are free and you have to be registered - no subscription required.

If you click on 'Search' and then military from the drop down menu, under featured collections on the righthand side there are a list of collections that are free. Not sure if this is all of them but you can certainly see the original records from WWI Service and Pension Records.
