Frank Wilton Draper 141 Broad Street, Birmingham

Mart1974

proper brummie kid
Just found two family members working at the above address as Draper's assistance in the 1891 census. Does anyone have any information about this business or a mention in a trade directory. The two young ladies were Eliza Jane and Amelia Holdcroft.

In 1890 and 1892 it is also Frank Wilton, in the first case listed as fancy draper, and in the second as cloak maker. He seems to be advertising a lot for experienced shroud makers in the period 1890-95, an seems to have built up a high end business as seen in the first advert below from February 1895, but even more so by the second from Nov.1915. He advertised a lot over the WW1 period. Later papers are not on the newspaper website.
The firm seems to arrive there about 1883 (not listed in 1882 directory). By 1932 they have expanded to occupy 139-141 Broad St and continue there till sometime between 1950 and 1956, though in 1956 no 139 is still a furrier under Wright & Son
