Footballers Taking Over Pubs

Old Boy

master brummie
Before Sky TV turned professional footballers into millionaires it was not unusual for a footballer, when he retired, to become a pub landlord.

Ofhand I remember Joe Bradford of Birmingham City taking over the Red Lion in Muntz Street, Small Heath when he retired and finally The Stockland at Stockland Green bhefore he retired for good.

Wilson Jones, also of Blues, took over The White Lion in Aston Road, Aston whose customers were mostly Villa supporters. Jimmy Dugdale of Aston Villa also became a pub landlord finishing at a pub in Yardley Wood the name of which I cannot recall. Does anyone know of any more?

Yes Johnny Vincent had the Travelers Rest in Northfield, and Wilson Jones had the George and Dragon in the jewelry quarter:(Mau-reece

Not a pub, I know but when the funeral director came to our house from the Co-op, imagine the shock I had to open the door to Dave Latchford! At this point, I have to say we were a family of Blues supporters, and he was my era, so to speak. The subsequent chat we had helped tremendously with the passing on of my father. My brother in law was present and he actually grew up with the Latchfords in Yardley Wood - so the chatter went on for ages!

Derek Kevan had a pub in town but Pete can't remember the name although he used it often enough when he was on the drays. It's something like the 3 bells. Ronnie Chivers had the New Inn at Arley for a short while. Jean.

Jean who did Ronnie Chivers play for,and Jan Dave Latchford worked at the Co Op in Nechells i used to have a drink with him in the pub right by The Dog and Partridge he has family here in Weston and i met up with him and his brother Peter in a pub called the Walnut Tree i asked how Bob was and they told me that he is living in Germany

Hi Old Boy,
I hope you don't mind me correcting your statement but Charles Wilson Jones (to give him his full title!) owned/ran The White Hart pub on the corner of Aston Road and Bracebridge Street, Aston (picture included). My dad spent a few quid and many hours in the smoke room there.

Pete said he played for B'ham City as goalie. All I remember was hes was a right can't say on here so and so. He had photo's of himself on all the walls and he wasn't liked by the punters. If what I hve said is incorrect BLAME PETE. Jean.

Thanks so much for info on the Latchfords Mau - reece? Shall share this with my brother in law, they were three good lads - when footbal was football!

John (Wolves Supporter?)

Thank you for correcting me. At least I got the White part right. Can you imagine David Beckham behind the bar of the 'White Hart' and Victoria doing the barmaid bit.

But for Sky TV that is where they would probably be.

Dan Tremelling, the Blues goalkeeper ran the Old Lodge on the corner of Coventry Road and Bordesley Park Road.

I know he is on Sky but I beleive Andy Gray has a pub out Berkswell sort of direction!

Hi to Paul; I do work for Andy occasionly he doesn't have a pub but works fulltime
for Sky Sports as a commentator. He used to own a night club in Livery Street
called The Zoo. Hope this helps.

Jan, when I lived in Knowle, Dave was manager at Widney Manor Graveyard. I met him through his brother Bob. I was quite surprised as well!

Old boy,
I am trying to imagine "Posh" puling pint's in the White Hart, nah, it don't work.
The last time I went in there c1959,the bar had turned into a cider house, they were drinking from crock mugs, didn't stay long.

I visited IKEA at Wednesbury yesterday and decided to take a slow route back via Dudley,Pensnett to Kidderminster. I was shocked at the number of pubs closed , boarded-up or demolished since my last visit to the area. Most appeared to have BANKS on them. I would not want to take on a pub now even if I had footballers wages.

John Pardoe ran the stepping stones in lye not sure who he played for might have been west brom so not a brummie lol.

Jimmy Leach ex Villa player ran the Grovener in Grovener Rd Aston in the 1950s and if you bought him a drink he would show you his cup winners medal won in the 1920s.
Eric

heres another one that was ran by an ex birmingham city player he was also england goalie......the royal george summer lane..
