Food for thought

Well my dad was a butcher and Inever heard the human blood story...good grief whatever next? My dad called black pudding 'Pigs pudding' Perhap's that's one he made up.
 
My mom used to refer to it a pigs began with a p and ended with an a. I didn't realise what she mean't and I wonder if she did as she was rather straight laced. Not in later life though. Jean.
 
Here in Canada it is called ' Blood Pudding' No wonder no one wants to eat it

all this talk of food is making me hungry...i well remember mom getting tripe and chittlings from a shop on the lozells road...faggots and peas could be bought from many pub outdoors....black pudding i still love it....great with a full english...and what about liver and onions.. mashed spuds..garden peas and lashings of gravy????..must do that sometime this week....

I did something just like that a couple of days ago.

Faggots, Onions, carrots, mashed potato and lot's of gravy. We didn't come up for air.
 
lovely stuff maggs...all the food mentioned did not seem to us any harm...and we never had sell by dates back then...also the only curry you could buy was the make vesta....came in a box...still think you can get it now...dad use to partake of it sometimes.....

Another thing from the 50's that I remember eating was a red skinned white sausage called Poloni. Think I saw a small tube of it in Morrisons. Gorgonzola cheese is not so common now having been replaced all sorts of cheese.
My parents would not know of many common ingredients that we use today. Thanks to Television, Foreign Travel,and the ability of suppliers to transport food we have this fantastic choice of different food.Now we can do even more truly offal things ( that passes for a joke round here ) with our strange bits and pieces.

Spot on Arkright,it was poloni,there was also white pudding,which I have only seen in Scotland and Birmingham.
 
I can't stand sherry - the thought of it with pickled onions.... YUK! Ruining good pickled onions! :-)

I've just read all posts on this thread , I don't like kidney, not enamoured with chitlings . Faggots yes, black pudding yes, white pudding yes but it must be the proper Irish white pudding that's the one with taste. Pigs trotters yes , faggots and peas yes .Best faggot and peas I've had was on a black country night out , the peas were of a grey colour a real tasty meal. When you analyse some of these dishes they were created out of necessity years ago to make additional food and less waste of the animals
 
For me, they need to be nice and crunchy, and some of these supermarket onions are soggy.

brown ones. i tryd to make some a few weeks ago,i followed the destructions off the net. bought the sars**ns viginer
all went well.i tryed one 2 weeks later. it was like sucking a onion in battery acid it was blooming disgusting. i think after
all my experience with them .,over the years.the shelf falling down in the spar,and glass and onions rolling around the store.and now this viasco.i will give em up.
