Fletcher - Wainwright Street

This is a bit complicated so I hope I can explain it clearly!

My Gt-Grandma`s married name was Elizabeth Boardman and in 1891 she was living in Lower Mitton (Stourport). But between 1891 & 1898 Mr Boardman left the family and Elizabeth began a relationship with Albert Fletcher, and in January 1898 she had a child with him - she was then living in Wainwright Street, Aston and called herself Elizabeth Fletcher. In 1901 they were still living in Wainwright Street. Family rumour has it that Albert Fletcher had been her lodger. Would it be possible to find out from the electoral roll when Albert began living with her?

Any help would be much appreciated

HI JANE ;
I Am just wondering whether or not is this the same fletchers family whom moved to the Avenue rd further down pass the aston cross
along the aston rd north as old mr fletcher used to live there just around the corner in the avenue rd it was about fifteen houses just from the corner
and i am thinking there was a pub on the corner it very well have been the haverlock [ general ] and the next one down alog there was the Albion pub
on the corner of white house street but old mr fletcher started to put a couple of orange boxes out side selling car head lamps and spares and later on in years the sibbling set up fletchers spares on darthmouth street for many years as every body especiay the men would know fletchers spares ;
the pub as mentioniond and shown was an Ansells pub ;but i just cannot recall the name ; but the havererlock taveren is where he said it was in haverlock rd saltley ; rest assured ; best wishes Astonian;;

Hi Jane,
There is a site that has electoral (B,ham) rolls on it but their earliest is 1912/13 then 1918 retuned servicemen record
so this is not early enough for your quest,,,,So looks like waiting for B,ham Library to finish improvements to check the rolls yourself or get a friend to pop in for you,,however be prepared not to find them,,,/ voting in them thar olde days was a complicated issue !
Women had to fit a certain criteria to vote at all,,lodgers I,m not sure but possibly couldn't vote anyway,,
UK lagged behind N Z in allowing Women to vote by many years (Suffragette movement in England put this right later)
so in answer to your question,,, best of luck,, Cheers John

Thanks very much anyway both of you. No, Astonian it wasn`t that Fletcher family - my chap was a cooper i.e. made barrels

Hi Jane

Sorry I can’t help with Electoral rolls, the earliest date I can see Alfred is 1912 where he is at 35 Clifton Road the same address as 1911 census and up to the 1939 ER.

The 1918 and 1919 absent voter’s list shows two of Elizabeth’s sons Alfred Durnell (Donald) Boardman Cpl., 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] City Battn., Signal Sec and Albert Edward Fletcher 15/1051, pte., 15[SUP]th[/SUP] R. War. Rgt. both living at 35 Clifton Road.

I have dug out this info, which you probably already have but just in case. Elizabeth married Alfred Boardman in 1887 (Kidderminster) her name at that time was Elizabeth Ann Jones so perhaps the son stated as born 1882 on the 1891 census was from a previous marriage of Alfreds.

The 1891 census says she was born Birmingham, 1901 born Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire and 1911 born Birmingham. Do you happen to know where she was born and if her maiden name was Jones?

Alfred died in March quarter 1922 Birmingham 6d 498 aged 64 and Elizabeth and Albert got married June quarter 1922 Aston 6d 977.

Hi Bewdley
thanks very much for taking the time to do that - Elizabeth had an `interesting` life - started off as a Cooke, married a Jones, widowed, married Boardman and finally settled with Fletcher. She had children from each marriage and it took a while to sort them out - fortunately my elderly father was able to assist as he could remember some of the details. The period I am most interested in is the time between Boardman leaving the family and the next census but I think that may have to remain a mystery
