I remember mom taking me to the fish as a child to fetch penny winkles those were the days

Hiya and welcome to the forum ..i still get my winkles from the market ..can't get the grandchildren to even try them though

Every Saturday Dad, Gran Dad, Uncle Tom & ME went to the fish market, Cockels and mussels alive alive Oh! What a treat, Kippers for brecky and then a trip to Woolworths, Then on the #17 bus back to Yardley. I can smell it now! John Crump oldBrit now in Parker, Co USA

Mom used to hang on till just before the market closed and they would auction off the crabs etc. I too can remember the smells and I still love most of the shelled foods. When we got home mom would drop the mussells in boiling water and I would hear them squeak.

I would love to put something the auctioneer said but it may be a bit too rude but it was funny. I think that was the first time I blushed. Jean.

I used to go there with my uncle who was a greengrocer and fishmonger. The wooden boxes with ice and fish from Hull & Grimsby! Lone long ago!
Me too, I went with my Dad to the old wholesale fish market during the school holidays, who was the same. I well remember those boxes and their contents. We also sold mackerel from a barrel. Happy days.

Ah! Great reminder, mackerel in a barrel, very inexpensive in those days as I distantly recall!
