fish and chip shops

Does anyone recall the chippie on Witton Road (opposite what used to be the former Empress Cinema)? It was run by a huge Greek lady who used to say, "Cheeps, cheeps, lafly cheeps!" and they were ace! If you asked her nicely you'd get a big bag of crunchy batter with your cod and chips - piece of fish and a load of chips for 1/6 old money. You could feel your arteries closing as you scoffed them, but were they ever delicious!

The best local chippie to me is Mr Chips on Kingstanding Circle - one portion of fish and chips is more than enough for the missus and me and the chips are actually crisp!

When I was a child there was a chip shop opposite the Holte pub ran by Cissi and her sister. I loved to watch them cut the potatoes into a large galvanised bucket of water dry them off and then deep fry them. There was also one in Manor road ran by Greeks and it was still in the same family until at least eight years ago. Jennyanne am trying to think where the one was in Serpentine road?. Bye. Jean.

We used to have beautiful fish and chips from Lambros's on Bordesley Green East. The chip shop at the Yew Tree Yardley still does very tasty fish and chips.

Kind regards

Dave

Dave,

I agree with you about the Yew Tree Fish Bar. That's the one we use the most.

I recall a story from the news a few days ago that the EC have suspended fishing quotas until 2012.They hope to have a new set of regulations by then. The number of working boats has dropped drasticaly and there has been a big outcry about the vast amount of dead fish put back in the sea.We might see some different fish for sale for a change.
The best meal you can get is good fish and chips but they are hard to find. Small fillets covered in thick undercooked batter and oil saturated chips are the norm.
The last Harry Ramsden's I visited I vowed it was my last ,mind its difficult to find one now..I am keeping a note of those you recommend and perhaps one day will find the perfect fish and chips.

Arkrite,
Not far from you,in Broad St.Worcester there is a Greek owned fish n chip shop that does an excellent, haddock and chips and the portions are LARGE...even for me.They brought out the uncooked fish for me to view before frying it.
Bon appetite.

I thought one of the best was Chequers at Hall Green. Fish and chips definitely don't taste as good as they used to.

Can anyone remember the chip shop in Clifford St ? Walking up Clifford St from Wheeler St on the right hand side you would pass the Manor Tavern and then on the next road on the right there was a sweet shop on one corner and a chip shop on the other

Big Gee sorry I didn't read all of your post and regards the chippy on Kingstanding circle we had two mini fish and chips and the fish was as big as the big fish anywhere else if you know what I mean. I only eat half a dozen chips but what I did eat were lovely. Will go there again SOON. Jean.

Hi Jean: Just caught up with this thread. You probably don't recall a fish and chip shopin Serpentine Road because I had the wrong street and the one
my husband and I bought from was in Holte Road and probably the same place as you describe. This would have been in l977. They were lovely.

The most recent place I went to was on Marsh Hill and that was four years ago. Near Gypsy Lane. Don't know the name. The fish and chips were freshly fried and I ate them in Witton Lakes Park. The only thing I am
afraid of eating is the donair meat. Perhaps I am missing out on something good but I don't like the look of it. We have donair here in Vancouver too
as well as fish and chips.

If you take a cornflake box and cut it into handy sized pieces, place it in a stale roll with bits of wilted salad then cover with searingly hot chili sauce, you have something you have to be drunk to eat. As you can guess I am no fan of Donner kebabs.
I like Turkish food but feel sad that this is the closest many people get to it. Try a proper Turkish restaurant and be amazed at what Sultans and Pashas got down their throats. Also makes a change from the Indian and Chinese, very good though they are.

When I get off the plane from foreign parts what do I want? An English Breakfast, Fish and Chips, Pork Pie, Cup of Tea and a pint of English Ale.

Yes I do like food abroad and dont moan about what I eat but I am British after all.

Arkrite I too love a variety of food but can't wait to cook fresh vegis. Unfortunately wherever you go they think all English fol eat nothing but chips but then again they are so convenient for busy restaurants. Jean.

fish and chips certainly ain,t the same today our kid
the fish comes in flimsey packets and it aint fresh andbecause of the cost they sel the peices in short lenghts and its covered in about 4 inch of batter to make it look big
but yes the price as gone up dramiticaly so i can under stand that like wise with the oil
that was cheap years ago the fat was beef dripping and it came inlarge blocks
quite resonalably priced and the fish came in wooden boxes for 1/6d a stone
god only knows what they pay for it now so todays fish and chip is to expensive
you can get a pub meal with good wholesom food for less
and they certainl cannot cook fish and chips like our ancesors i don,t care what any body says it our old tradition we were the experts and talented in the game
best wishes astonian ;;;

Late 1950's/early 1960's when I lived in Alum Rock, I used to enjoy fish and chips every Saturday lunchtime from a shop on the corner of Anthony Road and Maitland Road. Always good scoff from there!

No fish and chips are not like they used to be. Is it because the fat they cook them in these days is not the same? We used to go to a fish and chip shop a few years ago, that used to do the biggest piece of Cod ever. They used to call it Whale and chips. We always settled for that.

When we get back from holidays a good roast dinner is what we long for. Plenty of veggies and lashings of gravy....Think I'll go and start the dinner!!!

My great grandmother, Mrs Sarah Ann Floyd, owned two fish and chip shops on in Balsall Heath the other in Kings Norton. She ran the one in Balsall Heath from 1896 until 3 weeks before she died aged 94. She would get the fish from Market each day, as she didn't trust anyone to go shopping for the fish. She also carried the takings home and that was a trip to Satley.. do you thinks she'd have been able to do that today.

As a kid in Somerset we could never get fish and chips on a Monday as the local shops got their fresh Grimsby fish delivered on that day for the week. Sometimes they ran out of some sorts of fish by a Saturday night. Was it the same in Brum before the 1960's?

The best fish & chips i had were cooked by Mr & Mrs.Neal pre & post WW2, my Mother had a small shop and i took a bottle of sterilized milk ordered by Mrs.Neal i was rewarded with a packet of super chips every night, their shop was on Coventry Rd between The Swan pub and The New Inn at Yardley and closed when the Swan area and Coventry Rd was changed circa 1966/7. Len. (I did not put on weight!!)

Let's see...On my recent visit to Brum I had several meals of Fish and Chips. I was, of course, looking for something really geat. I went to the Charlie Hall Pub in Barnabas Road, Erdington twice with a friend. Had their Fish and Chip lunch. I thought it was very good. The second time my friend had Fish and Chips again and they looked very good. I found a Fish and Chip shop near the Erdington Library going toward's Orphanage Road and I tought their Fish and Chips passed my test.

The worst I had was a Harry Ramsden's in Euston Station. Expensive and not good at all.

I suppose it has to be the Fish and Chip shop of my childhood,Rileys on the corner of Garrison Lane and Tilton Road.Always did a roaring trade with the Royal George pub and the Blues ground opposite.
Never tasted any quite that good since.

Hitler bombed my fish and chip shop in 1940. It was 'Jacks' in Green Lane, Small Heath upposite The Vine pub.

The one next to the Marquis pub in Cattell Rd, run by a foriegn guy called Tony used to give me a bag of chips in exchange for a pile of old newspapers, first one I remember doing chicken and chips. Not sure about him, but the previous owner also did Faggots and peas, for which you had to take your own basin.

The one in Greenway St, Saunders I think - used to advertise 'Chips without eyes' and also sold ice cream..wierd combination !

Both great chips and friendly

That was very unkind of him.Was it something that you said,or did he just not like fish n chips?
Perhaps it was because he was a vegetarian, but then again he could have just had the chips!

It was Adolfs great plan. Destroy all the fish and chip shops, thouroughly demoralise the civilian population and the invasion would be easy. It failed because most of the Luftwaffe were rotten bomb aimers.

That explains it then,my mum lived in two different houses in Tilton Road and was bombed out of both of them. They were aiming for the chip shop in Garrison Lane!!

Reference cooking F&C's in oil or dripping.
I live in Yorkshire now, and several local F&C shops still cook in dripping here. Personally, I find it far too greasy and much prefer the drier, oil-cooked ones.

Also, I noticed earlier in this thread that someone was praising the quality of F&C's at Harry Ramsdens. I live not far from the original HR restaurant and fish bar at Guiseley, just north of Leeds, and I would not go there out of choice. Several people who have visited us from down south have asked to go there and we reluctantly take them. The fish and chips are greasy, and grossly over-priced.
The only plus point is that you sit in quaint, art-deco surroundings but for their F&Cs - my local Chinese serves better for half the price. Heaven only knows what the subsidiary franchised HR's serve up.
